Marco de Vos Summary, Conclusions & ActionsAAVP 2010 Summary, Conclusions and Actions Marco de Vos

Marco de Vos Summary, Conclusions & ActionsAAVP 2010 What did we do? SPDO shared current status and baselines for the SKA Community shared science cases for AA-low and AA-mid AAVP partners shared technological developments Mutual appreciation needs to grow.

Marco de Vos Summary, Conclusions & ActionsAAVP 2010 What did we learn? Much technological potential  Antenna element, LNA, interconnect,...  Configuration, calibration,... Potential science at the edges of the current SKA1 specs  E.g. detecting the Extended Dark MHz System-level considerations  “Be Dense” – the case for two elements  The Processing Balance – maximize A/T within cost-cap Need to integrate individual reseach projects into coherent program. Key vehicle: AAVS1 -> AAVS2 -> …

Marco de Vos Summary, Conclusions & ActionsAAVP 2010 What did we miss? Still an over-emphasis on receptor technology  Station-level digital processing (not just BF!!!) is as important  Processing requirements (HPC) as they develop over time Power is still mostly an afterthought.  Antenna element, LNA, interconnect,...  Configuration, calibration,... Industry involvement not addressed. Clear goals for the verification systems still missing. System design ≠ system engineering. Deep understanding versus strickt process.

Marco de Vos Summary, Conclusions & ActionsAAVP 2010 What did we gain? We’ve been exercising a new interaction model SPDO <> AAVP  Preparing for the PEP phase ( ) “Gently bringing the news that the SKA is becoming an engineering project very quickly.” “It’s about the system, not the elements” “It would be great if we could build a coherent project” “People start to realise that they need to start writing things up”

Marco de Vos Summary, Conclusions & ActionsAAVP 2010 What should we do? Turn AAVP into a coherent program[AAVP MT]  Further detailing of AAVS1, AAVS2 could facilitate this  Maintain focus on SKA1+AIP/SKA2, full system Analyse the impact of some science proposals[Community]  Detection of Extended MHz in SKA1 ??  HI & pulsars with 2015 AIP AA-mid array if 1500m 2 ?? Engage AAVP and PathFinders in system baseline[SPDO]  System requirements spec, top level SKA system design  Together seek the clever tricks to keep SKA within cost cap. Analyse several AA-system level trade-offs[AAVP]  Continuous beam-shape cal. versus element calibration  # elements, station size, station layout,...  Processing power SKA1 AA-low and AIP AA-mid

Marco de Vos Summary, Conclusions & ActionsAAVP 2010 What should we do? Write things up in reviewable documents[AAVP, SPDO] Read each other’s documents[all] Prepare for PreConstruction Phase [AAVP SC]  AA subsystem (PEP-WP6) Workpackage Consortium

Marco de Vos Summary, Conclusions & ActionsAAVP 2010 “We seem to have a plan..." Optimise for imaging 140MHz Optimise for pulsars and 400MHz
