CHS UCB BID Kick-off Meeting, Feb.15, 2002 Usable Design Tools & Skills Carlo H. Séquin University of California, Berkeley

CHS UCB I have been a designer for 30 years…

CHS UCB Most recently: CAD for Artists u How can we use the visualization power offered by computer graphics and by computer-controlled rapid prototyping for the design of geometrical sculptures?

CHS UCB “Hyperbolic Hexagon II” (wood) Brent Collins

CHS UCB SLIDE-UI for “Viae Globi” Shapes

CHS UCB Viae Globi: “Maloja” -- FDM part u A rather winding Swiss mountain pass road in the upper Engadin.

CHS UCB A Different Family: “Galapagos 5”

CHS UCB My Agenda within BID u Teaching Applicable Design Skills u Developing Better CAD Tools & Methods. Tight coupling: Research  Instruction

CHS UCB BID Issues u Different fields of design have the same key issues, but different nomenclatures. Goals:  Unify the language;  Create a catalog of issues,  a list of potential solutions.

CHS UCB Doing Design u In my courses on graphics and on geometrical design, I found that students often acquire a decent overview of various CAD tools & design techniques – but only at a textbook level. u When asked to design a plastic spoon, they are completely stumped or come up with totally impractical design plans.  My goal is to remedy this situation.

CHS UCB (my) “BID Manifesto” The proof of any new methods lies in their application to relevant design problems. u Apply new theories & methods of design. u Have the students actually design things – which then (hopefully) prove to be demonstratively better than earlier design.

CHS UCB Research Projects (1) l Based on optimization of a functional l E.g., MVS (for aesthetics) l Fewer controls to manipulate l Explicit consideration of constraints l Automatic attainment of some quality objectives. Better Surface Design Tools:

CHS UCB Research Projects (2) CAD tools for Ideation, Informal Prototyping: l Mimick the best of: clay, wire, paper, scotch-tape, styrofoam … l Without the adversity of: messy glue, gravity, strength limits … l Make available pseudo-physical materials that bend as nicely as steel wire, and stretch like a nylon hose, but are strong as titanium, and as transparent as quartz …

CHS UCB Research Projects (3) with Sara McMains Develop a haptic, immersive VR work station for telecollaborative design across the internet See in 3D, Touch, feel, Annotate, Modify, Share, Discuss …

CHS UCB Research Projects (4) with Paul Wright Design for Manufacturability, including Rapid Prototyping, and Injection-Mold Making. l Speeding up “Art to Part” (or actually: “Inspiration to Income”) l “Manufacturing-aware” CAD tools. (show limitations of fabrication process during all design phases.) Vague Idea Concept Mock-up CAD Model Proc.Plan, CNC File Prototype Part Commercial Product

CHS UCB Projects (4 cont.) with Paul Wright Physical Rapid Prototypes: l For early user testing, l and hands-on feedback l in application context. Zcorp 3D-printer FDM

CHS UCB Interdisciplinary Design (4 cont.) DUCADEDUCADE ECAD MCAD MOSIS chip fab./pack. PCB Assembly (Outsource) DFM Rules Mold Viability Cut Mold (Out source/In-House) AP 210 AP 203 AP 210 Mold Mfg.-ability Cybercut Pipeline Feature Recognizer PCB Mechanical Casings

CHS UCB Design Domain Coupling (4 cont.) Button Mote Design from NEST Group PCB Contact Pads and Lid Access Holes are considered features Access Holes are coupled to Contact Pads geometrically by position and size Alteration of center location of Contact Pads (Electrical Domain) will drastically effect Access Holes (Mechanical Domain) center locations. Coupling =

CHS UCB Research Projects (5) with Willing Artists Continue to explore the Art-Math Connection …
