G’day! Welcome to our project on Australia. Molly, Stacey, Melissa, Jodi and Ava worked on this project. We were learning about Australia in class. We researched our information from the internet and books. We hope you enjoy our project as much we enjoyed doing it.

 Australia is the only country that covers an entire continent.  Australia has two flags, the national flag and the native Aboriginal flag.  The Australian National Flag has three elements on a blue background: the Union Jack, the Commonwealth Star and the Southern Cross.  It is one of the largest countries in the world.  Australia is in the southern hemisphere.  Native Australians are called Aborigines.  The British began to settle in Australia during the C18th.  It is a VERY rich country.  One third of it is desert.

 Over 40,000 years ago Aborigines lived in Australia.  Dutch people came and split the Aborigine tribes in  The British conquered Australia in 1788.

Uluru  Uluru is an Aboriginal landmark.  Uluru is an ‘inselberg’ (“island mountain”) which is a leftover section of a mountain range after erosion has removed the original mountain range. Great Barrier Reef  It can be spotted from space.  It is 1 of the 7 wonders of the world. Sydney Opera House  It is famous for all the performances held there.  It took 19 years to build.

 Quarter of Australians are Europeans.  They have a passion for sports.  The capital city of Australia is Canberra.  Population is over 20 million  Money - Australian Dollar $

 Platypus, Kangaroo, Echidna and Koala are only found in Australia.  Over 500 parks to protect animals and plants  Many venomous spiders e.g. Red-Back spider and the Funnel-Web  Approx. 100 venomous snakes e.g. Tiger snake and king brown.  Australians are very protective of plants and animals.  Blue-tongued Skink- A lizard that spends the day tanning itself  Cockatoos- A crested bird- many different species with a long life span  Humpback whale - Acrobatic, swim with tail, eat plankton and small fish  Koala- 2-3 feet in height; nocturnal; plant-eaters; related to wombat and kids called a Joey.  Kangaroo-over 60 species; up to 2m in height and can travel up to speeds of 70 kph
