Moving to the New Economy The Challenges Ahead Seth Chase

Introduction ► Computer leverages brain power, not just muscle power ► Communication allows companies to compete in new ways ► Four Goals for New Environment  Leverage knowledge Globally  Organize for complexity  Work electronically  Handle continuous and discontinuous change

Organizing Principals ► Processes rather than functions ► Self-Organizing rather than designed ► Communities rather than groups ► Virtual rather than physical ► Organization has to learn ► Embrace rules of networks

Moving Forward ► Take a portfolio approach ► Follow employees ► Educate executives

Conclusion ► Technology is just a support ► Relationships are key to people working effectively ► IT is shifting from amplifying thinking and processing to amplifying communications and connecting ► It is the people who will determine whether the company succeeds or fails, not the technology

CLJ# 12: From: Wired.com “New Rules for the New Economy” This article closely parallels Chapter 15. It breaks the concepts down into twelve rules, many of which were used word for word in our book. The basic gist of it is that people run things with the help of computers, but if you ignore the technological advances, you will be left in the dust.

CTQ ► What will the next greatest innovation be that everyone has to have in order to be competitive? ► How can you help make the necessary changes for a company to be competitive without being in charge?
