Negotiating with Savvy The Pennsylvania State University

Today’s Topics What you value Your worth in the job market When to negotiate What is negotiable The risks How to close the deal

Prioritize what you are looking for Advancement Challenge and Responsibility Professional Development Variety Freedom on the job Salary Co-Workers Security Training Fringe Benefits Working Condition Location Job Title Reputation of Employer Type of Work

What are your skills worth? Salary information –NACE Survey - available in 410 Boucke –National Business Employment Weekly - online –US Dept. of Labor National Survey - online Supply & Demand –Bureau of Labor Statistics - online Other Resources –Employer Web site –Classified Ads - especially for same location

Timing is Everything Do your homework first Start your job search early Clarify the offer - have all the details first When you have an “ace in the hole!”

Is Everything Negotiable? Signing bonus Stock options Cost of Living Wellness Program Child care Health Insurance Domestic Partner Benefits Flextime & Telecommuting Tuition Assistance 401K & Retirement Salary? -- usually not but other compensation and benefits count!!!

Be careful out there... Negotiating can be risky! Be reasonable -- it is not a good idea to set ultimatums unless you are willing to walk away Remember -- a job offer can be pulled if the employer feels they cannot meet your requests Juggling offers is tricky -- do not get caught in the trap of pitting one offer against another If you communicate “this is what it will take to get me to say yes” -- say yes if they meet your requests

Leave nothing to chance Get your final offer in writing No need to accept immediately Accept the offer in writing Decline your other offers in writing

Questions? 413 Boucke
