Energy Environment & Sustainable Development Thematic Network on Energy in the Built Environment Market… Example : high efficient heat exchangers What : Efficiencies up to 90…95% Belgium : Almost not available Netherlands : Balanced ventilation represents 20% of ventilation systems in dwellings 90% have : –such high efficient heat exchangers –DC fans

Energy Environment & Sustainable Development Thematic Network on Energy in the Built Environment Conclusions During the last decade, the developments in window and façade components has been spectacular. During the last decade, there has been a fundamental shift in the boundary conditions for assessing the performances of windows, facades and other components of the building envelope. In essence, an integrated evaluation of the performances in relation to the indoor climate (thermal comfort in winter and summer, indoor air quality, visual comfort, acoustical performances) and the energy efficiency (heating, cooling, lighting, ventilation, auxiliary equipment) becomes the reference.

Energy Environment & Sustainable Development Thematic Network on Energy in the Built Environment Conclusions Whereas in the past, the envelope components were building parts which separated the interior from the outside, they become more and more technological elements which allow an optimal interaction between the inside and the external environment and which more are optimised in close relation with the design of HVAC and lighting systems. As a result, the performance assessment is becoming more complex.

Energy Environment & Sustainable Development Thematic Network on Energy in the Built Environment Conclusions The increased complexity for a correct performance assessment in relation to indoor climate and energy efficiency increases the need for support by appropriate standards and regulations. In particular, integrated energy performance standards and regulations applicable for new buildings and retrofitting and including assessment procedures for handling innovative technologies is a major challenge, whereby a European common basis is desirable. This clearly is in line with the proposed European Directive on ‘energy performance of buildings’ Brussels workshop as part of several workshops
