Wellcome Trust – 5 year strategic plan (early 2010) Funding projects → Funding people Discontinue project grants, programme grants, equipment grants, biomedical resources grants, technology development grants, University Awards and Flexible Travel Awards Last applications for the above July 2010, awards March 2011 Wellcome Trust Investigator / Senior Investigator Awards Flexible funding from 3 to 7 years, eligibility those with permanent posts Outstanding researchers in biomedical research, clinical research and (later) medical humanities from UK or developing/restructuring country Awarded by interview – track record, importance of scientific question and the proposed approach to tackling the problem Also Enhancement Awards to support equipment, collaborations and additional research costs Advisory boards that provide peer review will evolve More detail June 2010, submit October 2010, awards May 2011 – details on website Spring 2010 (Information published 12 November 2009)

Charity matching £3 + £1 August 2008 Government launched the Matched Funding Scheme Matches every £3 raised from donations with £1 of government money up to a cap of £2.75 million for 3 years, on top of Gift Aid at 25% If you raise the £3, you get the £1 Has to be a “gift” to be eligible for matched funding Contact DARO for further details to see if eligible for scheme Has to be smaller charities (<£60m pa), such as, perhaps: Esmée Fairbairn Foundation – Food Strand –The aim of the Food strand is to promote an understanding of the role of food in enhancing quality of life. It will prioritise the enjoyment and experience of food rather than its production and they seek to enable as many people in the UK as possible to access, prepare and eat nutritious, sustainable food Simon Wolff Charitable Foundation Travel Grants –Travel grants for young scientists to attend scientific conferences in research areas relevant to transport and health, and alternatives to cars

MRC/ESRC interdisciplinary studies MRC/ESRC Interdisciplinary Studentships –Closing date 10 December 2009, 4pm MRC/ESRC Interdisciplinary Postdoctoral Fellowships –Closing date 6 January 2010, 4pm ESRC managing these calls While proposals are invited from any sub-discipline of the social or medical sciences each year areas of particular interest to the two councils are identified The Priority areas for 2010 are: –Lifelong Health and Wellbeing –Understanding Individual Behaviour –Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (including Health Inequalities) –Research using (i) large social sciences and (ii) health research &/or clinical research data sets (including e-health records)
