History and Importance of Bifocals Benjamin Franklin wore glasses, and after the age of 40 he needed another pair for reading. In order to solve his problem, he split the lenses of each pair of his glasses. He looked through the top half for distances and the bottom half for reading. This was the invention of the bifocal glasses. Franklin’s invention made life easier for people. They would no longer have to constantly change their glasses to see things in the distance and for reading.
