AMS-SMFLyon, 19/7/20012 The DIEPER Project DIgitised European PERiodicals Raf Dekeyser Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (Belgium)

AMS-SMFLyon, 19/7/20013 Original targets Make inventory of retro-digitised (European) journals Select new material to be digitised Study and solve problems of author/copyright Solve technical problems about digitisation and OCR Construct unique access portal for searching Make texts available for browsing Solve problems of long-term preservation Create a model for economical exploitation Study problems of licensing and accounting Counter the problems of European diversity vs. JSTOR

AMS-SMFLyon, 19/7/20014 Inspiration : JSTOR (U.S.) Journal STORage, founded in 1994 Mellon Foundation sponsored strongly Preserve & make accessible core journal literature balancing conflicting needs of libraries, scholars & publishers start: p. (10 journals in history, economy); at present: 7 Mp. (150 journals) software for web access

AMS-SMFLyon, 19/7/20015 Project description Creation of a central access point for all digitised periodicals in Europe via a central Register (cfr. EROMM), containing register-records linked to archives spread over Europe, aiming at full-text search Creation of a virtual journals library prototype Establishment of an infrastructure and development of a uniform strategy for future retro-digitisation Creation of a model for financial viability

AMS-SMFLyon, 19/7/20016 Project Guiding Principles Model for cost-effective production scanning & OCR treatment Convenient access to digital library material Use of existing technological standards Meeting user needs Meeting preservation requirements

AMS-SMFLyon, 19/7/20017 Participants Univ. Göttingen Univ. Gratz Royal Libr. Københaven Univ. Helsinki & Nat. Libr. Finland Kath. Univ. Leuven Univ. Patras Univ. Siena Univ. Tartu Univ. R.Descartes, Paris V Springer Verlag ABC Datenservice

AMS-SMFLyon, 19/7/20018 Choice of mathematics? Exact sciences were preferred by EU – mathematics has longest timespan! Extra challenge posed by equations and figures Selection of 6 journals, dealing with mathematics to some extent –Centaurus (Munksgaard) –Mathematiceskij sbornik (Recueil Mathématique) –Mathematische Zeitschrift (Springer) –Mémoires de l’Académie Royale... de Belgique –Monatshefte für Mathematik und Physik –Sitzungsberichte der math.-naturw. Classe (Wien)

AMS-SMFLyon, 19/7/20019 Technical details Scanning: min. 600 dpi for archiving (TIFF) and OCR (XML), 300 dpi for delivery (JPEG) XML mark-up according to TEI standard Uncorrected OCR (with ABBYY FineReader) for full text search Metadata in DC and RDF/XML Identification by URN/SICI

AMS-SMFLyon, 19/7/ Economical aspects Cost for scanning, uncorrected OCR and indexing: ± 1.50 €/p Copyrights mostly circumvented by using older materials; recent material from Munksgaard and Springer Copyright problems were treated in collaboration with ECUP and Eblida Exploitation of the DIEPER infrastructure and an enlarged membership (with e.g. research libraries, associations,...) should lead to a self- supporting agency for delivery of DIEPER services

AMS-SMFLyon, 19/7/ Results Conference in Copenhagen March 2000 (together with LIBER, JSTOR and NORDINFO) Meeting in Leuven December 2000 – with representatives of other European digitisation projects Discussions about using an extension of EROMM as central register Plans to form a European network or consortium for the continuation of the project on a self- supporting not-for-profit basis
