Academic Leadership The Many Dimensions of Success January 17, 2009

Ethics and Diversity Janet Holmgren *74 (linguistics) president, Mills College Harvey Lam *58 (Engineering) professor emeritus, Princeton Moderators

When life was simpler… One-Two-Three-Four, Who are we for? Princeton, Princeton; Rah-Rah-Rah! ……. It is always important to know what community you belong to, and what you are for.

Definitions What is success? It means progress was made toward a goal you have chosen. What is leadership? The ability to set goals for yourself and others, and is prepared for action when the time is ripe.

What goal? That is the question! “Some men see things as they are, and ask why. I dream of things that never were asked, and ask WHY NOT?” ---Bernard Shaw/Robert Kennedy---

Ethics and Diversity Ethics is needed when you try to justify the rationales of your goals and actions. Diversity recovers the full pool of human resources to achieve your goals.

Topics for discussions What ethical issues might one encounter in an academic career? How does a junior faculty member advocate for diversity within a department? How does one best educate students in ethical conduct of scholarship and research?

More topics What avenues might one pursue upon encountering questionable conduct by colleagues on the faulty? How does one balance commitments to avoid conflict among outside professional activities, entrepreneurial aspirations, teaching and research?

More topics What are best practices for the development of useful ideas to advance gender and racial diversity that future faculty may engage in before they join a department? What are effective strategies and tactics that junior faculty members may use to support gender and racial diversity within the department?

Volunteering… We need a volunteer to give a brief summary of this session in the afternoon.
