Introduction to AI & AI Principles (Semester 1) WEEK 1 – Wednesday Introduction to AI & AI Principles (Semester 1) WEEK 1 – Wednesday (2008/09) John Barnden Professor of Artificial Intelligence School of Computer Science University of Birmingham, UK

Yesterday’s Individual Exercises 1.What was I getting at with my “Who” and “How many” questions to the whole class? 2.Are you intelligent? 3.What pets do you, your family, or your friends have? 4.Are such pets intelligent? 5.Are babies intelligent? 6.Are babies in the womb intelligent? 7.Is there intelligent life elsewhere in the universe?

Yesterday’s Group Exercises 1.What does “artificial” mean? You may wish to consider artificial milk, light, milk, flowers, smiles, insemination, … 2.What stupid things have you done? NB: silly things I’ve done: l Not asking enough questions in lectures when I was a student! l Switching the light off instead of leaving it on. l Getting into bed when I didn’t mean to. l Making silly mistakes when nervous. l Leaving house keys indoors. l Thinking it was Thursday when it was Wednesday. l Double-booking. l Chasing a mugger.

Ways I Have Been Stupid uNot asking enough questions in lectures when a student! uSwitching the light off instead of leaving it on. uGetting into bed when I didn’t mean to. uMaking silly mistakes when nervous. uLeaving house keys indoors. uThinking it was Thursday when it was Wednesday. uDouble-booking. uChasing a mugger (fewer times than Jack Straw though). uNot noticing my theatre tickets were for a different day. uThinking other people were being stupid when it was I who had misunderstood something.

Stupidity and Intelligence uSo, we’re not intelligent creatures? /// uCould an ant/rat/dog/monkey be stupid in those ways? uDid those mistakes arise out of good reasons, actually? uThe necessity of stupidity. Stupidity in the context of intelligence. uEmotion and thought. (Huge but hot topic.) uWe can intelligently reflect on our stupidity! uAs well as being stupid about our intelligence!!
