TELSiM Technology-Enhanced Learning Simulations in Medicine Wim Westera, CELSTEC, Open University of the Netherlands
Medical technologies
Medical education under pressure The fast moving field of medical technology: short technology lifecycles Variety of personnel working with technologies (nurses, ambulance staff, specialists,..) Common model is one-to-one bedside training –Limited opportunity for learning (availability) –Teacher bandwidth problem (quality) –Cost Increased demand through demographic trends (greying) Quality and safety of healthcare
TELSiM project goal …to amplify flexible, personalised and shared training opportunities in the medical domain.
Rethinking medical training Mixed reality training simulations combining cognitive and sensori-motor skills, using existing medical technologies Break through isolated training solutions by creating a shared simulation content space across Europe Critical mass: shared simulation case library across Europe (upload, rate, discuss, share) Various pedagogical models (workplace learning, inquiry learning, problem-based learning, etc) Personalised training delivery stations, which recommends cases and provides personalised, adaptive learning tasks Alignment with existing business processes, HRM etc.
Envisioned partners Medical technology developers Health education institutes Hospitals TEL-partners for shared content space, learning task models and personalisation frameworks European certification bodies (e.g. the European Association of Echocardiography)
