Identifying Occupational Competencies Topic # 6401A Ryan Stokoszynski

Occupational Competencies Occupational Competencies are the characteristics that allow one to perform the duties of their occupation. These can be divided into three areas: – Knowledge – Skill – Attitude

Knowledge Knowledge is the information that one has learned and can recall in performing an occupation. Also known as “stored information.”

Skill Skill is the capacity to perform activities that typically require a high degree of development in manipulative areas.

Attitude Attitude is how a person mentally feels about something. This feeling is demonstrated by smiles, friendliness, honestly, and productivity at work.

Task Analysis Task Analysis is the process used to identify occupational competencies. It involves careful studying to examine what a person does at work.

Competencies Needed for An Occupation The competencies required for an occupation can be divided into four groups: – Technical Skills are the skills specific to a certain occupation – General Education is the preparation one needs that is not specific to a certain occupation – Human Relations Skills are the abilities to get along with other people – Employability Skills are the abilities to get and keep a job
