Photoshop Basics, Part 2 Topics to be covered Fairly easy photo enhancement & retouching Creating font images: font styles & effects, plus using layers to add other objects

Practice Images  Go to  For each of the following images, select it, right click, then click Save Picture As / Save Image As (put each either in the folder you created last week, or else temporarily on your desktop and then be sure to drag to the recycle can when we’re finished) Coyotes Faded Color Photo Red Eyes Baby Jordan Tucker photo

Photo Enhancement # 1 Brightening Dark Photo

Brightening Coyotes: 1 st thing to try  Open Coyotedemo1.jpg file  Click Image > Mode > RGB Color  Click Image > Adjustments > Auto Contrasts – sometimes result is good, sometimes not. If good, keep it; if not, click Edit > Undo  In this case, result should be some improvement, but still pretty dark

Brightening Coyotes: 2 nd thing to try  Click Image > Adjustments > Curves  Make sure Channel is set on RGB  Click on Curve line towards bottom if too dark, towards top if too dark  Move line up to lighten, down to darken

Brightening Coyotes – Fine Tuning  Click on Image > Adjustments > Brightness/Contrast  Move Contrast slider right, to increase contrast until images sharpens

Strengthening a Light Color Photo

Color Photo Enhancement #1  Open photo  Click Image > Mode > RGB color to check photo is not on index  Click Image > Adjustments > Auto Color; don’t keep changes, so click Edit > Undo  Click Image > Adjustments > Auto Contrast; do keep changes

Color Photo Enhancements #2  Click Image > Adjustments > Curves  Try moving Curves lines as shown at left  Click OK if result looks good

Color Photo Crop  Click Marquee Tool  Select all of photo except white right edge & curved bottom corners  Click Image > Crop

Removing Red Eye  Open redeyesexample.jpb  Choose Magic Wand tool, then select red portions of pupils, leaving highlight unselected  Use Eyedropper tool to sample outside gray color of pupils – that color should become foreground color  Choose Brush tool, then on Option Toolbar, set opacity at about 70%, and brush size somewhat smaller than selected pupil  Paint over red until it is almost all gone, but not too uniform  Click Select > Deselect  With Brush tool set to 1 to 3 pixels, color any remaining red fragments

Red Eye Further Enhancements  Select the Burn tool, which is hidden under the Dodge tool (7 down on right side of tool box)  On Tool Option Bar, set brush at about 2 pixels, range at midtones, and opacity low (c. 10%)  Try running burn tool over eyelid where new pupil edge meets, perhaps around eye ring where edge of red eye was  Select Dodge tool, try using it to slightly whiten white of eye

Removing an Unwanted Element: Baby Jordan Photo’s Date Stamp

Choose Clone Stamp Tool  Open jordandemo.jpg file  Increase canvas window so image is at over 100% magnification (bottom at extreme lower left corner)  Select clone tool, which is usually the default one showing  Set Clone tool options at Brush size: 13 Mode: normal Opacity: 80%

Using Clone Tool Put cursor over area to be copied Press left mouse button down while also pressing Alt keyboard button - copying is happening when you see a circle with a crosshair in its center NOTE: be sure to copy color very similar to area being covered Release Alt, move cursor to area to be covered – each click will “paint” cloned image – NOTE: area being covered is within circle & area being copied shown by crosshair

Use Magnetic Lasso to Create Transparent Background For Tucker Image –  Open SWTdemoOrig.jpg  Choose Lasso tool – put cursor over regular lasso tool, hold down mouse button so pop up box appears  Choose Magnetic Lasso

Using Magnetic Lasso  Magnetic Lasso “sticks” to clear outline, follows it almost automatically  Tip: if one area not distinct, draw gray outline just outside of Tucker profile  Touch Magnetic lasso tool down somewhere on Tucker shoulder  With left mouse button held down, let lasso move along Tucker silhouette. Guide as necessary – note  Tip: click backspace to undo 1 segment of path; repeat to undo more  With Lasso, trace complete path around Tucker silhouette; when circle complete & path intersects, whole area should be selected and can be moved, etc

Moving Image to Transparent Background Canvas  Check total image size by clicking Image> Image Size and looking at image pixel dimensions  Click File > New and choose transparent background; also make sure total dimensions are at least as big as other image file’s  Return to original Tucker canvas. Be sure a part of New Canvas is also visible  Choose Move tool (top right tool), click on and drag selected Tucker silhouette over to new canvas. It now has a transparent background

Making Enhanced Text Images To Get Started:  Open new canvas: make it 600 x 300 pixels 72 dpi (web) or 300 dpi (print) Transparent background  Choose Type Tool (looks like “T”), on Tool Option bar choose 48 font size, Arial font and black color (click on colored rectangle to activate Color Selection box)

Cruising Font Styles  Key in your own name, or other title phrase (“Nursing News,” “Graduation Photos,” etc)  Select both it and the name “arial” within the font style box  Press down arrow to change name of font style in Tool Options bar’s box – change should also show up for your text  Note also that many fonts let you amend them by selecting regular, bold, etc  Choose a font style for your text

Add Effects  To prepare: Click Layer > New > Layer. Click & drag new layer to put it underneath text layer. Make Foreground color white, choose Paint bucket, use to turn new bottom layer white  Click Layer > Layer Style and Layer Style box will appear  Check Bevel and Emboss; experiment with various settings in Structure and in Shadings areas – observe results. Keep best  Click Layer > Layer Style and choose Drop Shadow; experiment with its variations

Saving File For Print  Click File > Save As,  Then choose file format (most common =.jpg &.gif - NOTE for transparent background, it must be.gif  Be sure to notice where you are saving it and name it something you’ll recognize / remember

Saving for the Web  Click File > Save for Web  In Save for Web box, choose “4 up” tab, survey 4 different choices shown for best file kind and size.  Your aim: the shortest loading time for an acceptably sharp image.
