Pre-historic activities u IT in education actually started in the 1980’ies, with he introduction of PCs u Main frame computers were only sporadically used for educational purposes (military, universities etc.) u Some minor activities occurred in the 70’ies, like programming (BASIC), accounting, statistics etc. u Magnetic tapes, punched cards etc.

’Old Times’, 1980’ies u Computer courses for teachers –Programming; BASIC, Pascal, LOGO –Stand-alone educational software »drill-and-practice »games –Standard software »wordprocessors, spreadsheets, databases – , bulletin boards u Development of educational software

Medieval Times, u National and international collaboration –projects, R & D, political attention u Software packages –MS Office, simulations,.... u Communication systems – , conferences, (’Gopher’, WWW) u Educational Information Science (M.Ed.)

Modern Times, u Compulsory I(C)T in teacher education –different levels, national curricula u Internet & WWW –so what? –development of resources /applications u ODL and cross-disciplinary integration u New paradigm? –institutional strategy / policies –politically accepted and enforced
