Immigration Statistics Emma & Katie

Number of immigrants In 2004 African immigrants made up 64.4% of the immigrants (90,250 people) from third world countries. (It was only 58.9 in 2000) In 2004 immigrants from America made up 8.7% of third world immigrants. There are thought to be 6 million immigrants resident in France. (June 2010).

Number of Asylum seekers In 2004 there was a total of 61,056 people who applied for asylum in France. The majority of asylum seekers come from Africa. In 1980 there was only 19,912 people who applied for asylum in France.

Employment Statistics The rate of unemployment in immigrants is double that of residents of France. A quarter of female immigrants are employed as non-qualified jobs. In Île-de-France 69% workers in cleaning companies are immigrants. Working immigrants send home about 8 billion euros a year back to their countries (June 2010)

General Statistics Although the rate of immigration in France has stayed the same, the reasons have changed. More and more people are entering the country for family reasons. 5% of people less than 66 years old have two immigrant parents.

Statistics for the UK In 2004 African immigrants only made up 27.4% of immigrants from third world countries. In 1980 only 2,352 people applied for asylum in the United Kingdom and in 2004 there were 40,202 applications, which is still lower than France.
