Purpose of today’s meeting Present the MCE staffing plan & process involved Opportunity for open dialogue and discussion Next steps and moving forward

University of Maryland Cooperative Extension University of Maryland- CP and ES are the state’s Land Grant Universities Extension is one of three missions Extension’s role is to extend the L-G university Provide unbiased research-based information to clientele

Extension is constantly evolving Extension has evolved a great deal since its beginning Factors involved Demographics Needs of clientele Identified priorities Funding & resources

Why develop a Staffing Plan We need to assess and evaluate MCE staffing in light of current factors Develop a uniform process for filling future positions

Process for developing the plan (1) MCE admin team began work in spring 2007 Bob Tjaden, Dick Byrne, Susan Morris, Doug Lipton, Mary Ellen Waltemire, Tom Miller Dean Wei, Dan Ramia, Barbara Duncan Their task: develop a staffing plan that is best for the state, College & MCE

Process for developing the plan (2) Gathering and reviewing information MCE strategic plan Efficiency & effectiveness survey of faculty & staff Listening sessions; input from faculty, EAC members and stakeholders Current budget, staffing & resources Mapping Building consensus

Key features of the MCE Staffing Plan CRED (Community Resource and Economic Development) emphasis Multi-county Programming teams County Extension Coordinator – pilot position Building partnerships across campus Leveraging funds & resources

Key features: process for filling future positions Utilize GIS database Utilize local listening sessions Ensuring program coverage over multi- county areas Bottom line: being most relevant to MD residents and efficient with our limited resources

Implementing the plan FY 08 Hiring plan – short term Positions in progress Priority 1: Realignment Initial faculty to conduct multi-county programming Priority 2 and 3: Positions identified to be filled These can move forward with the plan

Involvement of Faculty with the MCE Staffing Plan Support of the plan Buy-in with multi-county programming Opportunity to build area of expertise Benefit to clientele Communicating with others about the plan

Involvement of Staff with the MCE Staffing Plan Staff are our first-line/first impression of MCE Understand & communicate how program teams provide coverage Sharing of programs & expertise in multi-county areas Communicating concerns & ideas in MCE

Points to remember This is a plan (a guideline) for MCE to follow There are opportunities to make adjustments and changes as needed
