Fundamental Interpersonal Relations Orientation-Behavior™ (FIRO-B®) assessment 54-item self-scorable instrument gathers critical insights into how an individual's needs for inclusion, control, and affection can shape his or her interactions with others. use in one-on-one coaching, small groups, or teams

Purpose Help you explore the typical ways that you interact with people Help you think about the meaning of power to you, in terms of your relations with other people

Scores tell you… You give (express to others) e = express You get (want from others) w = want Inclusion Control e i e c w i w c

Inclusion Measures your needs to establish and maintain contact with other people –Two dimensions of inclusion Expressed e i = indicates the strength of your need to include others in your group activities Wanted w I = your desire to have others include you in their group activities Question? Do you think there is a relationship between E or I on the Myers Briggs/Typefocus?

Control ~ Power Measures your need to control or be controlled by other people –Two dimensions of control c Expressed e c = indicates the strength of your need to control others and have power over them Wanted w c = strength of your need to have other people control you or tell you how to behave

Back to original meanings You give (express to others) e You get (want from others)w Inclusion Control e i e c w i w c

Interpretation~Examples A score of 9 on Expressed Inclusion e i = indicates the strength of your need to include others in your group activities –Very outgoing toward others –Continually make gestures toward others to include them in activities (sports, parties, work activities) –S/he probably has no strong needs for others to include him in their groupings

Interpretation~Inclusion Examples A score of 0 on Expressed Inclusion e i and 9 on Wanted Inclusion w I –Seldom makes invitation gestures toward others –Desperately wants others to include her/him Those with strong scores in both categories will both want and express a lot of inclusion People with two low scores on inclusion will be more of a private person who neither wants to include a lot of people in her activities or be included in theirs

Control/power examples c Expressed control (e c ) –Strength of your need to control other people and have power over them Wanted control (w c ) –Strength of your need to have other people control you or tell you how to behave

Control/power examples A high expressed control/power (e c ) score will like to be in charge When she encounters another high expressed control/power person, there’s likely to be a power struggle A low expressed (e c ) likes to be controlled and will make an excellent subordinate

Comparing inclusion to control Individuals with strong inclusion needs want to be on the team, regardless of what it is doing and how it is performing Individuals with strong control or power needs wants to be a winner, regardless of what team s/he is on or who the people on it are
