Learning Situation The Techniques of Research course needs a visual tutorial to access online databases through the University of Akron's library.
Learning Goal The students will obtain three full text scholarly articles with proper APA citation for the literature review assignment in the fully online version of the Techniques of Research course by the end of the module.
Needs Analysis Comparative Needs o Students in the fully online Techniques of Research course perform worse than the traditional classroom course students when locating articles through the available databases. Felt needs of online students o Overwhelmed o Confused o Under-performing Instructor desires the students to perform at a higher skill level when working independently.
Resource Limitations Conceptual Resource o Technical skills lacking Institutional Resources o Slow internet connection Time Constraints o 2 1/2 hour face to face o One week module online
Learner Analysis Master students enrolled in the fully online version of the Techniques of Research course Foundation course for all students in a master's degree program in the College of Education Adult Learners In-Service teachers
Task Analysis Procedural learning style o Step-by-step demonstration
Learning Theory Behavioral and Cognitive Learning Theories o Process broken down into steps o Strengthen conceptual learning with examples and demonstrations Visual Learning Style Kinesthetic Learning Style
Learning Objectives 1.Given a resource list, the students will identify at least two databases with articles pertaining to their content area. 2. The students will build searches in the online database using keywords and modifiers to display approximately 100 articles. 3. The students will apply APA style citation to their full text article with 100% accuracy.
Instructional Sequence: Pre-Test Pre-Instruction Activity Initial Presentation: Students were given an overview of the Digital Library Research Module. Generative Strategy: First, students will identify different online databases. Secondly, these learners will identify search terms.
Instructional Sequence: #1 Objective: Given a resource list, the students will identify at least two databases with articles pertaining to their content area. Initial Presentation: The students read the instructor notes #1, the database resource list, the step-by-step “How To” document, and watch the “Selecting a Database” tutorial video. Generative Strategy: First, the students will identify two databases pertaining to their content area. Secondly, the students will summarize the process for Activity 1 in the discussion board.
Instructional Sequence: #2 Objective: The students will build searches in the online database using keywords and modifiers to display approximately 100 articles. Initial Presentation: The students use the step-by-step “How To” document while watching the “Searching a Database” tutorial video. Generative Strategy: First, the students will identify keywords and modifiers to display full text articles. Secondly, the students will summarize the process for Activity 1 in the discussion board.
Instructional Sequence: #3 Objective: The students will apply APA citation to their full text article with 100% accuracy. Initial Presentation: The students read the step-by-step “How To” document and watch the “Easily Obtaining Citations” tutorial video. Generative Strategy: First, the students will identify where the APA citation is in the search result list. Secondly, the students will select APA style citation and apply the citation to their works cited page for Activity 1.
Why We Chose Our Media Materials: Technological Support Provides a visual for to guide students Captures the expertise of our SMEs, Dr. Liang and Dr. Aby Has the potential to benefit students beyond those in the Techniques of Research course
Message Design: Overview o Introduces, explains, and prepares students for the learning tasks o Includes learning goal and objectives Organization of Instructional Materials o Saved materials in the order students will need to complete the final evaluation Layout Structures o Headings and subheadings o Font size and font colors o Ordered lists o Typography- bold and italics
Instructional Resources: 1.Overview of the Module 2.Instructional Note #1 3.Pre-Test Activity 4.Research Database Resource List 5.Procedural "How To" Document o Videos embedded 6.Activity 1 7.Feedback Survey
Assessment Plan Activity 1 o Think of 2 research topics o Develop 2 research questions o Locate 2 different online databases for research topics o Identify 3-4 keywords for database article search o Conduct search to locate 3 full text articles o Using APA style citation, cite the 3 articles o Summarize your process and post to the discussion board
Implementation: Round 1 Target Audience Used: In-Service Teachers Timeline: April Process: o Using the "How To" document to conduct a search in the ERIC database on the topic "reading instruction to special education students" o Cite the article in APA style, "Teaching Literacy to Students with Severe Cognitive Disabilities" o Complete Feedback Form Results o Confused o Frustrated o Did not use videos Recommendation for Changes: o Directions and "How To" document o Feedback Survey
Implementation: Round 2 Target Audience: o More In-Service Teachers o Posted to Field Experience Discussion Board o Posted to Instructional Design Discussion Board o Posted to Instructional Technology Portal Timeline: April 16- April 23 Process o Same as Round 1 Recommendations o Dr. Aby- Enlarge to full screen option o Dr. Liang- Editing Module to delete instructional items o Enlarged videos in the "How To" document by 50%
Evaluation The module was designed to use Activity 1 as the evaluation tool for the online Techniques of Research class. Our participants completed similar, simplified search activities which are included on the “How To” Document.
Reflections of Project 1. This project was a lot of work and very time consuming. 2. As a team, every step of the process was discussed, divided, and completed. 3. We learned collaboration skills and drew on our strengths. 4. The feedback from initial users was very helpful in making adjustments to the initial design. 5. It was nice working with two different SMEs.
