Past paper question (credit) a)Describe the gathering techniques which could have been used to identify the sphere of influence of Inverness. Justify your choices. (6) b)The sphere of influence of Inverness has an unusual size and shape. Suggest reasons for this. (4)

Model answer (a) To find out the sphere of Influence of Inverness you could interview the manager of shops find out where they deliver goods to. This would provide up to date information about the sphere of influence of the shops. You could also carry out a questionnaire of shoppers to find out where they have travelled from to do their shopping. This is a reliable and accurate first hand information. A survey of car tax discs could also be done in car parks in Inverness to see where the cars have travelled from. This will provide reliable information about where the cars have travelled from and is quicker than issuing questionnaires.

Model answer (b) The sphere of influence is an unusual shape as Inverness is the largest settlement in the northwest highlands. This is due to the fact that there is very little flat land in the area to build a city further North. Those living in the Islands may fly to Inverness if they need to use a high order service. The sphere of influence doesn’t reach very far south as settlements in the Grampian area are more likely to go to Aberdeen.
