DT211/1 - Assignment 1 Proposal to Equip Compu- Global-Hyper-Mega-Net

2 Scenario... You have just been hired by a venture-funded PDA software development start-up firm, Compu-Global-Hyper-Mega-Net (CGHMN), as an IT Support Specialist. You met the Chief Technology Officer (CTO), Lisa Simpson, this morning as she welcomes you to the company and briefed you on your duties and job scope. CGHMN is a brand-new setup and is located in Evergreen Terrace. The office space is about 2,000 sq ft and other than the rooms being partitioned and furnished, it is still quite bare. You are brought to meet your immediate supervisor, Milhouse Van Houten, who is the IT Support Manager, and the IT Support Team. The IT Support Team has 5 members, including yourself. Milhouse gathered the team and said, "We have to get down to work fast. Amongst the many urgent tasks, we need to equip the office for staff IT needs. We have only 5 weeks from today. We are a start-up and the bottom-line is very important. I need a proposal with budget from the team in 1 week's time for me to vet. Once it is ok, you will have to present it to top management. "

3 Deliverables For your assignment you must deliver (according to the formatting specifications below): A 5,000 word written proposal for the above scenario A proposed budget You will be required to do a group presentation, but each individual must create their own 10-slide Powerpoint presentation showing your proposed plan.

4 Written proposal must include: 1. Cover Page with the following information; your name, student number, module title, course code, course title, assignment number 2. Introduction explaining the main points of the proposal you developed 3. Review of the research you carried out - websites, books, interviews, etc. 4. The main body of your proposal identifying the various departments, the type of work they perform and the IT resources they will need to do their jobs successfully. 1. In this section, you will begin by defining the scope of the task you undertook, i.e. what equipment does the IT Department support? For example: PCs, laptops, mobile communications, software, VOIP phone systems, photocopiers, fax machines, printers, workstations (desks and chairs) 2. Define what type of computers would best suit the different departments within the company, and what software each group will need. 3. Consider data security and backup requirements of the organization 4. Demonstrate the use (at least once) of, a PMI, a CAF, and an OPV 5. Create a MindMap to visualize your plan (can be hand-drawn or computer designed, e.g. FreeMind 5. Concluding Remarks 6. References section 7. Addendum – a reflective section where you discuss how long it took you to complete the project and what you thought out it (500-1,000 words)

5 Formatting The assignment must be formatted as follows: Use IT_Proposal.doc as template for the written part of your proposal  All hand-written material, e.g. Mind Maps, must be scanned and inserted or attached to proposal (as JPEGs, GIF, PNG, etc.)  References must conform to the Harvard referencing scheme, e.g. Lemmon, E.J., 1965, 1991, Beginning Logic, Chapman & Hall, ISBN Use IT_Budget.xls as example for you budget (budget must be in Excel) Use IT_Presentation.ppt as basis for your presentation Save all files with following naming convention (insert your own Last Name):  DT211_ITProposal_Lastname_2009  DT211_ITBudget_Lastname_2009  DT211_ITPresentation_Lastname_2009

6 Submission The proposal must be submitted in both hard and soft copy: Hard copy (print)  Print out on standard white A4 paper (color printing not required)  Staple all pages as one, single document (binding not required)  Hand to lecturer in class on 09 December, 2009 Soft copy ( )  Save all documents and files in a ZIP folder  to  Subject of must be in the following format: DT211/1 - Assignment 1 –Last Name, First Name e.g. DT211/1 - Assignment 1 – McMahon, Colman  must be received by lecturer before 19:00 on 09 December, 2009

7 Penalties Plagiarism is a very serious offence in DIT and you must acknowledge all material used by including a referenced bibliography Submissions which do not adhere to the formatting and naming conventions will be penalized by 10%. Assignments not submitted in full by the due date may be refused and/or marked out of a reduced marking scheme.
