Polishing Your CV M. Patrice Eiff, MD Professor, Family Medicine Susan Hayflick, MD Professor, Molecular and Medical Genetics, Pediatrics, Neurology Put my whole dept on same line

Seminar Objectives Review the SOM CV format Discuss ways of customizing your CV for the intended purpose Discuss ways to document scholarship, teaching and service on the CV in preparation for promotion

SOM CV Format Present Position And Address Education Professional Experience Scholarship Service Teaching (OHSU Educators Portfolio)

II. Education Undergraduate and Graduate Postgraduate Certification Board Certification, ACLS Licenses (more pertinent for job searches) Most physician scientists wouldn’t list licenses on any cv except one that really needs to list this.

III. Professional Experience Academic 2001-present Assistant Professor, Dept. of Molecular Molecules, OHSU Administrative (past and present) 2001-present Medical Director, Off-campus Health Clinic 1999-2002 Clerkship Director Hospital Privileges (job searches) 1999 - present Oregon Health & Science University Most physician scientists wouldn’t list hospital privs on any cv except one that really needs to list this.

IV. SCHOLARSHIP Area(s) of Research/Scholarly Interest Grants and Contracts Federal/Local/Foundation Active Completed Pending (include score/percentile)

Standard Format for Grants Important to have all the info in one place Identify if you are PI or Co-PI Include % effort Include time period Be consistent

Standard Format for Grants National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine R21AT0981930 Ectoparasites and Me Principal Investigator: David Smith, Ph.D. Co-Investigator: Paula Peoples (5% effort) Total Direct Costs: $372,910 (7/1/05 – 5/31/06) I would only list annual direct costs as a rounded figure.

Publications Peer-reviewed Books Chapters Reviews Abstracts Electronic Publications Non-peer-reviewed Other (e.g. policy/government documents)

Electronic Publications Often need more explanation for reviewers to understand true nature of publication can add annotation on CV or explain in personal statement Is it peer-reviewed? How does e-publication process compare to peer-review process for journals? Include web location or link

Invited Lectures, Conference Presentations or Professorships This is NOT the place for abstracts presented at meetings These are presentations you have been asked to give because of your expertise International and National Regional and Local

V. SERVICE Membership in Professional Societies Just list them Granting Agency Review Work NIH Study Sections Editorial and Journal Review Activities List journals you review for List Editorial Board positions separately Pat-these should probably be ordered by significance (grant reviews and ed reviews above membership in the plastic surgeon’s professional ping-pong team

V. SERVICE Committees Community Service International/National Regional Institutional Departmental Community Service e.g. volunteer at safety net clinic; science fair judge

V. SERVICE Clinical Responsibilities Service Awards (examples) 3 half-days outpatient clinic, 6 weeks of ward attending/year Service Awards (examples) Science Mentor of the Year, AWSEM (Advocates for Women in Science, Engineering & Mathematics) Jan 2006 Portland Monthly Magazine: Top Doctors Rose Awards (list number received each year) Awards often span categories (scholarship, service, …). I prefer a single category for all awards that are REAL awards--not things called awards that are really not (NRSA is an example from the NIH world)

TEACHING OHSU Educator’s Portfolio Purpose is to assist faculty in preparing their material for promotion and tenure Not all sections will apply to you Appendices are examples of ways that faculty may estimate the hours they spend in educational activities Consider it a guide to presenting your work as an educator in the most effective way

VI. TEACHING (OHSU Educator’s Portfolio) Overview of your Role as an Educator Best placed in personal statement Use Educator’s Portfolio as a guide

Scholarship of Teaching VI. TEACHING Scholarship of Teaching Curriculum and Educational Program Development (examples) Ectoparasites Lecture Series – Dept of Molecular Molecules Coordinate clinical research rotation for pathology residents Director and primary mentor for Pathology fellowship training in parasitology Educational Publications Educational Conference Presentations

Educational Activity VI. TEACHING Educator’s Portfolio Appendices don’t work for everyone Important thing is documenting the extent of your teaching activities List student/housestaff/faculty teaching separately (examples) 5 lectures, MM 629, Behavioral Psychoparasitology Small group instructor, 20hrs/yr, PCM 6 clinical topic lectures/yr, Pathology Residency Program Add to your CV every time you add a new teaching activity

Effectiveness of Educational Activity VI. TEACHING Effectiveness of Educational Activity Teaching evaluations will be included with your P&T packet Documents that compare your teaching scores compared to a larger group of faculty are the most powerful Honors and Awards for Education Collaborative Skills Professional Development in Education Awards as one category in my humble opinion.

Advising or Mentoring Where does this go? Best placed under Teaching List who you’ve mentored or typical number of learners/yr mentored List their accomplishments under your mentorship (e.g. publications, abstracts accepted, research awards, positions obtained)

And now for some sticky points…

Points To Consider Do you list any personal information on your CV? (DOB, spouse/ partner, children) No, no, no. How about race, or disability, or gender? No one would ever consider including race (I think). These are all the same. I may need to be hog-tied during this slide discussion…

Points To Consider How much is enough documentation? Do you list all lectures, all service? Don’t’ kill the person reviewing your cv (grant, paper, bank robbery note…)

Points To Consider How do you explain non-traditional or unique activities?
