WHERE ARE WE? Moy Resource Centre is located in the centre of Moy village, in the grounds of Roxborough House.

AREA COVERED The Team provides services to visually and hearing impaired people who live in the Armagh and Dungannon District Council area.

DEAFNESS Deafness is a generic term which covers a wide range of hearing loss Deaf with a capital D denotes people who regard themselves as part of a linguistic cultural minority group. (Deaf people). deafness with a lower case d is used when describing hearing loss in general. Hard of Hearing denotes people with an acquired hearing loss.

THEORY Social Model of Disability (Oliver 1990) Loss Disengagement Theory

THEORY ‘Maslow’s Heirarchy of Needs.’ However, contrary to Maslow’s theory, the Deaf community formed as a result of an oppressive society, having achieved a strong sense of ‘belonging’ despite the fact that lower level needs may not have been met.

NINE COMMANDMENTS For relatives, friends and those caring for Hearing impaired people.

1. Hard of hearing people need to see you clearly

2. Face the light and the person at all times

3. Include hard of hearing people in your conversation. Let them know what you are talking about

4. Don’t hide your mouth, eg. Behind a newspaper

5. Talk directly to hard of hearing people

6. Speak clearly, not too fast and repeat if necessary

7. Don’t shout into the ear or hearing aid.

8.Tell hard of hearing people what you are laughing at.

9. Avoid unnecessary noise to get the persons attention before speaking
