4 As we recall a complete sentence should have at least a subject and a verb. The following are simple sentences: –I sleep. –The Sun shines. –The baby is crying. –We were hungry. –Sheila sings (in the bathroom). A simple sentence

5 Single and Plural Subjects/Verbs The Subject and Verb of a sentence should agree with each other, especially in Present Tenses. –I drink. –She/He/It drinks. –You/We/They drink. –I am happy. –She/He is happy. –You/We/They are happy. (I, she, he, it, you, we, they, are Pronouns)

6 Pronouns Sometimes the subject may not look that simple. For example: Simon, Paula, and Jeff All the students in that class The tree in front of my house My brother and I Pronouns are words to replace nouns and proper names (like Simon, Hong Kong, CNN, etc.). 7 Verbs In Simple Present Tense the verbs vary according the subject. –She runs. –She is hungry. In Simple Past Tense: –She ran. They ran. My brother ran. –She was hungry. (Here there is an S-V agreement too.)

8 Rule for spelling Some verbs change spelling when they are added by –s or –es for he/she/it. For example, the verb ‘cry’ –I cry –She/he/it cries –They/we/You cry Also for the verbs ‘try’, but not ‘buy’. Can you find other examples?

9 Conclusions Every sentence should have a subject and a verb; The subject and the verb should agree; Especially in Present Simple Tense, the verb will vary according to the subject; Some verbs will change spellings in the present simple;
