Development of the IF2 Chain for the FPU of the HIFI Instrument Alexander Megej July 1 st, 2003, Groningen

Introduction I  Second Stage of the IF-Amplification Chain

Introduction II Two different amplifier types: Bands 1  5 (4  8 GHz) Bands 6H&L (2.4  4.8 GHz)

Activities Planned LNA Design 2 stage LNA for the altered frequency range of the Band 6√ 3 stage LNA for the Bands 1-5 (4  8 GHz) √ Re-design of signal combiners Soft substrate: RT6002 of Rogers (SRON).√ Alternative: TMM10i with the existing ETH design√ Development and testing of amplifiers to be completed by the end of 2002 √ SRON performs mechanical design of the IF-2 box in co- operation with Mecom, NL √ ITT-Package definition √ Design and technology transfer to an industrial partner starting in 2003 

Activities Planned Manufacturing of the Final Amplifier DMs √ /  Issue of ITT √ Assembling of the IF-2 DMin progress Transfer of the Design and Technology to an Industrial Partner 

Critical Points: HEMTs

To achieve the necessary input matching, attenuator were proposed at the input. This reduces the gain, which just meets the specs. PROPOSAL: to reduce the specs to -10 dB at the input (min. of -16 dB is still the output of IF-1 due to cable losses) Relax the DC-consumption requirement (15 mW instead of 12 mW allowed) Use of isolators (Unacceptable due to higher mass )

Further Activities Possible Re-Design Manufacturing of the Final Amplifiers Depends on the decision, which HEMTs have to be used Assembling of the IF-2 DM Transfer of the Design and Technology to an Industrial Partner QM/FM/FS Programme
