Logging into the University of Derby Electronic Library (Udel) Login to UDo then select “Athens -for library resources” under Quick Links

Use the Electronic Journals A-Z to find a specific electronic journal. Make sure you find the Athens login link(s) at a journal page & click on it (them) otherwise you will not be able to see a full journal article we have access to.

You are now signed in & have access. You can see a specific issue or search the journal back issues by e.g. keyword

Searching for articles on a topic There are several databases which you can use to find some journal articles on a topic The following databases are especially useful: EBSCO Electronic Journals Service PsycARTICLES Elsevier Science Direct EBSCO Business Source Premier Expanded Academic ASAP

EBSCO Electronic Journals Service allows you search across a wide range of journals we subscribe to from different publishers. It’s not sophisticated, you just type in a few key words & it doesn’t find all we have but it’s very useful & easy to use. Make sure you click on the Athens login link at the top of the EBSCO page.

PsycARTICLES is a database containing the complete articles of the journals of the American Psychological Association (APA) & others. Many are not covered in EBSCO EJS so it is another very useful place to search

Science Direct is the database of Elsevier, one of the world’s largest journals publishers. Though many of the journals are contained in EBSCO EJS, the latter does not go as far back in time as Science Direct. The first time you use it, you need to register your details with Science Direct.

For later …. Other databases widen your search by indexing which journal articles have been published. The Library may have some of the journal articles but not others. e.g. Web of Science PsycINFO Google Scholar

Electronic Books We have a growing number of e-books but not all books we would like are available for Libraries to buy The next slides take you briefly though accessing electronic books & how to see them but bear in mind that they have a lot of features & so this barely skims the surface We have to use different e-book suppliers which work slightly differently to each other

The “Resources by Subject” page for Ergonomics gives a title list with links to relevant e-books

You can look for e-books using the library catalogue.

You can search the library catalogue just for e-books by choosing More Search options & selecting ebooks in the Collection drop down menu.

For some modules we have digitised some of the key journal & book chapter readings. Choose the Copyright cleared resources link. Note we can only digitize book chapters and journal artilces strictly in compliance with copyright regulations.

Did you know? The Distributed Leaning Unit operates a postal loan service. You can be sent any books we have. You need to fund the cost of return postage You may request 20 journal articles free of charge if we don’t electronic access to a journal & a further 20 at £2 per article See the the InFocus (Information for off campus students) website for details

Library guides are available from the Information Resources page & from the Ergonomics “Resources by subject” page. The Resources by Subject page for Ergonomics also gives specific links to journal indexes & databases relevant to Ergonomics as well as e-books.

The Infocus Electronic Resources help page has screen shots of the locations of Athens links on journals pages. It also has some basic online tutorials on accessing electronic journals.

Also see the Athens & passwords help on the Information Resources page. This also gives advice on other possible I.T. difficulties accessing resources from outside the University

Finally – please ask if you need any help David Clark Subject Librarian: Science & Technology
