Subtitling - Basic notions → How many lines should a subtitle contain? Maximum 2 (for a hearing audience/ non-hearing audience – 3/4) → How many characters per subtitle? Change language: Change language:  Main Menu > “Settings” > “Language” > ex. “Português” 1. Creating new subtitles

 Movie menu > “Open” > select the video file + File menu > New subtitle”

 The desktop will look like this: the video file running on the black area and the 1st subtitle higlighted in blue

 To edit the subtitles, you must pay attention to the time running on the right side of the screen.  When the 1st speech/text appears on the screen, immediately pause the video and insert the time down on the Show/Hide boxes and write the text/translation on the Text box

 Everytime you want to insert a new subtitle, press the “Insert” key on your keyboard or go to “Edit” > “Insert Subtitle” → Keep doing this until your subtitles are finished and ready to be saved

Final procedure → After all subtitles are ready to be saved, go to “File” > “Save” or “Save As...” → S.W. is able to work with lots of different types of files, but the most common are.srt (SubRip) or.txt → Choose the type of file, “Custom format” > “Save”

→ File Menu: “Load Subtitle” → Choose the subtitle you want to synchronize and choose “Open” → If the subtitle and the video are in the same file, the video will open automatically 2. ALTERING PREVIOUSLY CREATED SUBTITLES

 If the video needs to be open separately:  If the video needs to be open separately: → “Movie” menu > “Open” and choose the video file

Subtitle Synchronization → If the video and the subtitle are correctly synchronized, view the movie until the first line appears and pause it. Then select the first line of the subtitle and click on the button → Now go to the end of the video and select the last subtitle line, pause it and click on T The following window will appear to check if the synchronization is correct. Click “Yes”

 To work with video and subtitle simultaneously, select option “Both” on the side bar  Then, on the Main Menu “Edit” > “Timings” > “Set Delay”

→ The following image shall then appear:  From this point on, you can delay the subtitles or put them ahead in order to adjust them to the speeches/ text in the video file

Delayed Subtitle Synchronization → Select “for all subtitles” option → For a 2 seconds delay: select option “+” and insert the time of the delay in order to adjust the subtitle

Ahead Subtitle Synchronization → Select “for all subtitles” option → If the subtitle is 2 seconds ahead: Select the option “-” and then insert the time

Line by line synchronization → In “Set Delay” choose “For selected subtitles” → Select “+” or “–” according to what you want to do → Apply  Synchronize subtitle  If some subtitles are still desynchronized (due to different frame rates) you may have to synchronize them line by line

Final procedure → After checking film and subtitling coordination go to menu “File” > “Save” or “Save As...” → S.W. is able to work with lots of different types of files, but the most common are.srt (SubRip) or.txt → Choose the type of file, “Custom format” > “Save”
