HIPerSpace The Highly Interactive Parallelized Display Space

HIPerSpace Next generation research tool for high resolution digital displays Tiled display of 30” LCD monitors each with 2560x1600 pixel resolution 14 columns of 5 screens 286,720,000 pixels of total resolution

HIPerSpace Driven by Dell XPS high end gaming rigs Core2Quad CPUs 4 Gigs of memory 2 Quadro FX5600 video cards Each with 1.5 GB of memory Each card drives 2 4 MegaPixel screens Dual gigabit NICs 1 on private 10-net LAN 1 on Optiputer next generation all fiber internet Plans to add 10Gb network cards

OptiPortals Multiple other ‘OptiPortal’ tiled displays deployed In Calit2 (120 MP) UC Irvine (200 MP) NASA Ames Research University of Melbourn (80 MP)

What can you do with them?

What can we do now? Large image visualization High resolution images (several giga-pixel) Large collections of images Image overlays Multiple high resolution movies (HD now, 4K soon) Video streaming/teleconferencing Real time HD video/audio Real time Wii/360/PS3/PC streaming Custom applications for scientific visualization

What can’t we do now? Currently 0 video games bummer

Development Environment Cent OS5 Linux/ROCKS cluster roll CGLX Middleware Cross-Platform Cluster Graphic Library Allows an OpenGL GLUT style application to be built to run on a tiled display Handles UI events and display synchronization via network message interface Provides framework for developing higher performance tiled display applications

What is missing for video games? User input is limited to mouse and keyboard events on a head node There is no node-to-node messaging interface

What support would you have? Full time Research Scientist dedicated to CGLX development We’re anxious to find out at what point the design paradigm fails Add reasonable features as needed Sample code for developing CGLX applications Support from PhD students actively developing their own CGLX applications Support from me with some of the advanced networking stuff
