The Road To…

The Post Secondary Enrollment Options Program allows eligible high school students to take college courses while still enrolled in high school. HISTORY Began in Minnesota in 1985 to provide classes that were otherwise unavailable at the high schools. Approved by the Ohio senate in states have similar programs. ROLE OF THE HIGH SCHOOL Determines number of academic units students take. Knows which college courses fulfill graduation requirements. Decides whether college GPA is figured into high school GPA. Makes sure students don’t take too many Carnegie units.

The Road To… ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Students take college courses for college credit only. Students are responsible for all costs including tuition, books and fees. Students take college courses for both high school and college credit. Expenses for tuition and books are covered by the local school district for eligible students enrolled in the public school. Nonpublic school students can participate using funds set aside for this purpose by the state. (Form SF-PS 140NPP)

CRITERIA 12 TH & 11 th Grades: 3.25 Cumulative GPA 21 ACT Composite or 1000 SAT Composite (verbal and math only) 12 th -Completion of 13 of the 16 state minimum college preparatory units. 11 th - Completion of 9 of the 16 state minimum college preparatory units. 9 th & 10 TH Grades: 3.25 Cumulative GPA 21 ACT Composite or 1000 SAT Composite (verbal and math only) 10 th Grade: Completion of 5 of the 16 state minimum college preparatory units. Limited to one class per semester Letter of recommendation from a teacher in the subject in which the student wants to take a PSEOP course attesting to superior academic ability and maturity.

The Road To… How To Apply Fill out regional campus PSEOP application with parents Fill out academic advising plan with high school counselor Turn in completed application with ACT scores, high school transcript, application fee and any other required materials Attend mandatory assessment and orientation Nonpublic high school students must seek funding from the state by submitting (to the state): Form SF-PS-140NPP Copy of college’s letter of acceptance Signatures from the student, parent, guidance counselor and college administrator

MIAMI UNIVERSITY MIDDLETOWN Fall: May 1 st Spring: November 1 st Mandatory Orientation: August Important Dates STATE March 1 st : Schools must inform students of the PSEOP option March 30 th : Students must declare their intent to enroll in PSEOP

The Road To… Important Points $35 Application fee At time of first application Every May 1 st There are no guaranteed PSEOP courses. Students should always have back- up courses in mind at the college and high school level. One day a week, night classes and off-site courses are discouraged. Summer classes are not included in PSEOP. College and high school academic calendars differ: holiday breaks, semester start dates and end dates may be different. The college classroom can be diverse – know your academic, social, and emotional maturity level. Students must maintain a 2.0+ cumulative MUM GPA and a 3.25 high school GPA to continue in the program. Failure to do so suspends students from the program for 1 year. Students credits that may transfer to college – get ahead & save money Students (and parents) are responsible for incurred cost in case of failure, withdrawal, or lack of attendance. $35 Application fee At time of first application Every May 1 st There are no guaranteed PSEOP courses.
