Hype Cycle 2010 and Cloud Computing Sidra Inayat

A hype cycle is a graphic representation of the maturity, adoption and business application of specific technologies. HYPE CYLCE?

Gartner has examined the maturity of 1,800 technologies as well as trends in 75 industry and topic areas. Each of the 75 individual Hype Cycle reports provides a snapshot of a key area of IT or business.

The Hype Cycle for Emerging Technologies; features technologies that are the focus of attention in the IT industry because of particularly high levels of hype, or those that may not be broadly acknowledged but which we believe have the potential for significant impact.

Hype Cycle 2010

Media tablets, private cloud computing, and 3D flat-panel TVs and displays are some of the technologies that have moved into the Peak of Inflated Expectations, according to the 2010 Emerging Technologies Hype Cycle.

Gartner defines this as a "phrase of over enthusiasm and unrealistic projections." And according to Gartner's map, it means these technologies may be on their way to mainstream, the next stop is one of disillusionment because those technologies failed to live up to expectations.

Cloud Computing Cloud computing has reached a tipping point, where in we are now entering an industry-wide transition from propriety platforms to more open and universal frameworks

This means the race toward massively scalable, fully parallel systems, is heating up, and leaving the current stack in the dust. The market is apparently deep in the early stages, so there’s a lot of headroom moving forward.

Private cloud computing is making its way up the Technology Trigger, towards the Peak of Inflated Expectations. Actually certain industries (e.g. Governments) are realizing the benefits of cloud computing but are concerned about the level of security for their data - enter the private cloud.

You can see cloud computing has crept past the Peak of Inflated Expectations and is making it's way down the curve towards the Slope of Enlightenment Cloud computing is about to explode! How can we use this kind of information to our advantage as an organization? You'll see on the graph above that each technology is marked differently on the curve - this tells us the timeframe in which Gartner expects the technology to reach mainstream adoption. They have predicted that cloud computing will be mainstream within 2-5 years time.

The adoption and impact of cloud computing continues to expand. In Hype Cycle for Emerging Technologies, cloud computing overall appears just topping the peak, and private cloud computing is still rising. Cloud/Web platforms are featured, along with mobile application stores, to acknowledge the growing interest in platforms for application development and delivery.

The broader take away from information like this, is that when looking to define your strategy (even in a local market), you have to be aware of the global picture; you need to have a good idea of where capital is shifting and resources are being allocated because those decisions will drive the predominate narrative.

Conclusion As new types of products hit the market, invariably there’s a following of hype and misappropriated information regarding their real world implications and understanding. One of the rather clever ways of categorizing new tech is to align its development path along a Hype Cycle, something which Gartner Research introduced just over fifteen years ago.

Thank You!
