Syllabus for Engineering Statistics Probability: rules, cond. probability, independence Summarising and presenting data Discrete and continuous random variables: probability distributions. Special cases: binomial, Poisson, hypergeometric, normal, exponential Expected values and variances of r.v.’s, linear combinations Sampling distributions: sample mean, proportions, variance. Standard error, Central limit theorem Point and interval estimation: mean, proportion Control charts: construction and use, Xbar and S

Microphotograph of a thin section. The colours of different grains are produced due to Birefringence(Double refraction).

To fit ellipses to grains a clear idea about grain boundary is necessary.

Strain Measurement Magnitude of deformation is a marker of strain. Hence to measure strain we have to measure ellipse parameters, namely Major and Minor Axes and orientation. Ellipse parameters are obtained by fitting ellipses to grains.

Good luck in the exams!
