Resulting in them Being ill-treated and abused by their employers of coolie-agents Women being abused and so suffered most Joining the Secret Societies

Piracy was a problem because Endangered lives, property and trade of merchant community Attacked trading ships and stole the cargo and killed or sold people as slaves Were so bold that the even attacked ships at a short distance outside the limits of the harbour

Resulted in Merchants keeping away from Singapore which threatened the growth and wealth of Singapore which depended on trade
