What Is Life? Investigation 1 Populations and Ecosystems

Is Anything Alive In Here? Share with your group observations of the vial you took home.

Is Anything Alive In Here? Make observations of the 5 vials. Note any changes and draw them on the Five Materials Observation sheet. If there is no change, you should record NO CHANGE.

Is Anything Alive In Here? Do you notice any changes in the vials today? Do you see evidence of life in any of the vials? Which ones?

Is Anything Alive In Here? Circulate around to other groups to compare vials.

Is Anything Alive In Here? Liquid 2 is sugar and water. The sugar was added to provide food in case any of the materials was alive and need sugar as food. Did any of the vials with sugar water provide any interesting results?

Is Anything Alive In Here? Material B is yeast. The bubbling and possible popping of the cap are the result of gas exchange going on in the vial. Gas exchange is evidence of life. The yeast is alive.

Life in Different Environments Three Liquids: Liquid 1: Salt water Liquid 2: Sugar water Liquid 3: Plain water

Life in Different Environments Can you identify any of the other four materials? A: red sand B: yeast C: polyacrylate crystals D: radish seeds E: brine shrimp eggs

Life in Different Environments Fill in the information for the liquid environment you investigated. Circle yes or no to indicate whether the material showed evidence of life in that environment. Write a few words describing the evidence in those cases where life was indicated.

Life in Different Environments Whole – Class Data Salt water Group Sugar water Group Plain water Group

Results Some organisms can appear to be non-living. When organisms are put into an appropriate environment, they can become active. Different organisms have different environments that allow them to become active.
