1 Infrastructure issues Andy Nichols, STFC – RAL MICE Collaboration Meeting, Harbin, 13-17th January 2009

Infrastructure Issues Happily not too much to report: –The bulk of the heavy civil engineering has gone very well, as reported elsewhere –It will be completed by January 31 st 2009 –Original worry about clash with tracker readout evaporated due to step II delay Remaining (non-heavy) jobs: –Air conditioning – tender action in progress – timetable for completion of NE corner installation by 31 st March (this is vital for the Linde cooling plant) –Roof extract fan – on order –Compressed air supply – in progress, will be ready for operation of step II –Fire protection and main lighting – scheduled for February 2009 – off critical path, but irritating delay –2MVA power upgrade – my main worry!

Infrastructure Issues Identified a new job: –Users have complained that cooling fans and other equipment just dies due to ingestion of dust –We have to face up to that, but will do this to help: After January when major drilling should be finished, the concrete floors are sealed Then we get a firm of professional cleaners to clean whole Hall As many walls and ceilings as possible are then painted (quote received, already - £50K!) After that point any dust-making operation has to be done in controlled conditions, ie, in tent, or with vacuum

Infrastructure Issues Worries: –Funding for power upgrade –UK funding profile for Phase Two infrastructure – after step IV it’s problematic –Funding for re-decoration of MICE Hall – MICE doesn’t pay –Keeping the installation team together is absolutely vital, it’s worked very well so far and is critically dependent on UK funding level (most of it is in manpower)
