A rich history

Inauguration of Ghent University Latin is the language of tuition 1817 Inauguration of Ghent University Latin is the language of tuition 1830 Belgian independence French becomes the language of tuition 1876-1890 Research becomes an important responsibility 1930 Dutch becomes the language of tuition 1991 Larger autonomy State University Ghent becomes Ghent University 2003 Ghent University Association 9 October 1817 - The State University of Ghent is officially opened under the rule of king William I. The first rector is the physician Jean-Charles Van Rotterdam. The official language of tuition is Latin. The first lectures are held on 3 November 1817, in 4 faculties (Arts, Law, Medicine and Sciences) with 16 professors and 190 students. 1830 - After the Belgian revolution, Ghent University is subjected to important changes. Not only does it acquire a new head but the official language is also changed from Latin to French. The educational competencies are shifted drastically as well: the university loses its faculties of Arts and Science. Ghent University reacts with the start of ‘free faculties’, where professors teach for free. 1876-1890 - The law on higher education entrusts universities with the awarding of academic degrees and the organization of examinations. In addition to education, universities were now required to concentrate on scientific research. The laws on higher education turned out to be an important stimulus for education and research at Ghent University. 1930 - The university in Ghent becomes the first institution in Belgium to teach in Dutch. The often change of language of tuition is the main reason why the number of courses taught in English at Ghent University is still so low. 1991 - The State University of Ghent becomes Ghent University and is thereby given a considerable autonomy. It consists of more than 130 academic departments, spread over 11 faculties. 2003 – The Ghent University Association (AUGent) is a collaboration effort involving Ghent University, University College Ghent (Arteveldehogeschool) and the University College West Flanders (Hogeschool West-Vlaanderen). On an international level Ghent University Association defines itself as a dynamic network aiming at top-quality results. Ghent University Association numbers 56,000 students and 12,000 members of staff. 2013 – The Flemish government decides that all the academic fields of study offered by university colleges must be transferred to the universities. From now on, academic education is offered by universities and professional education by university colleges. Ghent University thus welcomes ca. 40 fields of study. 2014 – Ghent University opens its first campus abroad in Songdo, South-Korea. It offers three bachelor programs: Molecular Biotechnology, Environmental Technology, and Food Technology.
