MyOCW Demonstration 3 MyOCW Goals Movement Support –Expand access and use of OCWs’ high quality resources –Build mechanism for sustainability –Improve user understanding of the OpenCourseWare concept and Creative Commons sharing. User Support –Enables users with similar interests to form interactive communities. –Provides users with spaces and tools to integrate OCW materials across OCWs –Provides space to structure and organize learning and progress –Provides space to create and share derivative materials

MyOCW Demonstration 6 Potential Risks Networking –Harrassment of some users by other users (cyber-bullying) –Spam –Fraudulent identities –Fraudulent education schemes (e.g. someone posing as an educator and luring people to an outside site to charge them for materials or instruction that they never provide). Content –Posting of inappropriate, especially sexually inappropriate content –Links to inappropriate content on other sites –Posting of copyrighted content –Links to copyright violations on other sites –Incomplete or missing attribution on OCW materials used –Fraudulent materials

MyOCW Demonstration 7 Prospective Partnership Elgg – –Founded in 2004 by two friends at University of Edinburgh PhD program Core staff: 4 Volunteer Development Network –Offices in UK, Canada, and Netherlands –Intended purpose is for networked education Used by 22 Universities and Schools worldwide (known*) Used by 16 other organization types worldwide (known*) –Open source code with volunteer development community –Current functionality meets most of MyOCW’s requirements Road map includes most additional functionality (messaging, browsing) –Connections to open community in Canada, New Zealand, and Utah State *Organizations using the software are not required to contact Elgg.
