Presentation transcript:

Fresh Water Budget of the Arctic and Atmospheric Mode of Variability NSF -- Fresh Water Initiative Bruno Tremblay Robert Newton Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory

Objectives To quantify the contribution of the surface ocean currents to the fresh water flux from the Arctic to the Nordic seas To better understand the link between this fresh water flux and atmospheric forcing

Proposed Work Run a 3-D sea-ice ocean model using “observed” atmospheric forcing from reanalysis data synthetic forcing with realistic yearly variability

Ice Export vs NAO Tremblay, 2003

Fresh Water Budget of the Arctic Results by Meredith et al suggest that the upper ocean contribution may be much higher Twice as large as the sea ice contribution Aagaard and Carmack, 1989
