Viking conferance1 Conference VIKING multimodal travel planning, Copenhagen October 28-29, 2008 European travel planning (Co-modal and seamless) By Krister Nordland

Viking conferance2 Content The customer need of seamless multi- modal travel planner information on a European level (country based travel planners are not seamless) Information about possibilities in new EU-Spirit XML-protocol Suggestion to integrate EU-Spirit and VIKING ferry/car –routing.

Viking conferance3 Seamless = Europa ! Co modal = ALL traffic modes and their combinations! Bike (since 2008) Including: Regional add-on services ! Personal travelinformation !

Viking conferance4 Skåne’s network Ö r e s u n d c o l l a b o r a t io n G 14 I Oct 2002 Östersjö/Baltic sea-area

Viking conferance5 Customer demands/services: Co-modal Information on a Regional, National and International/European Level

Viking conferance6 Unaccustomed travellers go between addresses/POI

Viking conferance7 Price info

Viking conferance8 Maps (GIS) is important add-on information

Viking conferance9 Compare: travel time, price and environment

Viking conferance10 Work together for more information channels, more services and lower costs Example:

Viking conferance11 Travel planner: Analysing the importance of realtime looking at the search-time and travel request time Real time info important ! 0-1 h1-24 h> 1 daysQuestions/day Web 38%47%15% / day Mobile 90%ca 9 %Ca 1% / day (My pages) IVR Voice recognition 70%20%10% / day Sept % 41% 42% 14% March % 40% 42% 14% Sept / day / day

Viking conferance12 EU-Spirit – new XML protocol Existing functionality: Planned travel information (stops, addresses, POI) New functionality (not mandatory): Booking and fare information Semi-Real-time and Real-time information Advanced map interaction Accessibility information On-demand traffic Ecological/environment information

Viking conferance13 Simplicity Seamless co-modal traffic information Which options exist to get from one point to another? Comparison of several alternatives: - public transport (e.g. bus, train, plane) - individual transport (e.g. bike, car) - combinations of both inter-modalmulti-modalco-modal +=

Viking conferance14 Which options exist? car (park&ride) taxi public transport footpath ? + Bike + Flight/plane + Ferry

Viking conferance15 EU-SPIRIT (distributed travel planning) Local public transport Direct Flight Local public transport Local public transport Long distance train Local public transport local public transport Long distance train Long distance flight Local public transport

Viking conferance16 Viking Ferry Planner Car Rostock-Trelleborg Car Car Kiel-Oslo Car Car Bridges or Local ferries Car

Viking conferance17 Combination of Ferry, Car and EU- SPIRIT (in operation 2009 ?) Car Ferry Public Transport Car Flight Public Transport Public Transport Ferry Car

Viking conferance18 Car Routing (all countries) Search Controller Ferry Routing & EU-SPIRIT User Interfaces Co-modal Planner Flight Routing (all countries) Train Routing (all countries) Local Routing Operator A, B, C Car Routing Walk/Bike Routing Ferry Routing (all countries) Bus Routing Real Time Text messages Co-modal Combinations Text messages Tariffs Real Time

Viking conferance19 Examples Viking(

Viking conferance20 Examples Viking

Viking conferance21 Helsinki - Hamburg Four different routes

Viking conferance22 Costs for integration € as an initial effort. - Anpassung Suchcontroller € - Erfassung Metadaten – global4.000 € - Anpassung Übergangspunkte4.000 € - Aufsetzen eines Fährserver für EU-SPIRIT8.000 € - Integration und Test8.000 € € yearly for hosting (done at HaCon as we do for the normal Viking) € yearly for maintenance So overall € for the first year and € for the following years.

Viking conferance23 Conclusions Conclusion 1 European GPS-based car travel planners (including ferries) exist in many cars. It is time for public transport to reach the same level (=integrate EU-Spirit with ferry/car-routing) Conclusion 2 Multimodal seamless travel planning must be not country-wise but european based (=Easyway) Example: The Öresund region can not have a traffic information border.
