Outcomes of the 2006 symposium: The GCSE Resources Project David Hutton Oxford Materials
Issues Raised by March 2006 Symposium Identification of opportunities to provide “Materials Science” - related resources and support Initial Teacher Training and CPD in “Materials Science” Methods of delivery for resources that ensure widest dissemination Provision of resources that can be used with all pupils while targeting the most able Teachers’ need for support on “new” Materials Science topics that have appeared in new GCSE specifications e.g. nanoscience/SMART materials
Materials Science in the Curriculum Materials Science and the new GCSE Science Specifications Materials Science and the new GCSE Science Specifications A survey of the new GCSE Science specifications being taught from September 2006 Summarises curriculum requirements and assessment arrangements for all GCSE Science specifications from AQA, EDEXCEL and OCR A companion paper to be produced when new GCE specifications (for teaching from September 2008) are finalised
OxMAT, UKCME, IOM3 Collaboration “Exploiting Materials Science” A project to develop a suite of resources to support teaching and learning in Materials Science, inspired by ‘21 st Century Science’ but targeted across the curriculum. The first six resources proposed for development include: Materials Properties SMART Materials Biomedical/Biomimetic materials Nanotechnology Intelligent Packaging Modern/Smart Materials used in Sporting Contexts
OxMAT, UKCME, IOM3 Collaboration “Exploiting Materials Science” Each resource should be available for distribution over the internet and, as a minimum, contain the following Teacher’s notes including curriculum links A Practical “hands-on” activity that can be carried out in the classroom (possibly a simulation or ICT interactive resource) A PowerPoint presentation (or similar) A Poster Background Material relating cutting-edge research to GCSE/GCE theory and current applications Identification of NAMED industries/companies producing materials/applications
OxfordMaterialsOutreach A dedicated website to disseminate information and provide easy access to teaching and learning resources Links to websites of other institutions providing relevant material will feature prominently
