Chemistry IH: Chapter 1: Intro To Chemistry

What is Chemistry? The Study of “stuff” Stuff = “Matter”

What is Matter? Anything that – Takes up space and – Has mass

FACT Chemistry underlies all life processes – Digestion – Photosythesis – Breathing – Gas exchange in blood stream – Cellular respiration – Etc.

5 Areas of Study in Chemistry 1.Organic Chemistry: study of all chemicals containing carbon – Ex: hydrocarbons (fuels)

5 Areas of Study in Chemistry (cont) 2. Inorganic Chemistry: Study of chemicals that don’t contain carbon

5 Areas of Study in Chemistry (cont) 3. Biochemistry: The study of the reactions that take place in living things. Ex: digestion, photosynthesis

5 Areas of Study in Chemistry (cont) 4. Analytical Chemistry: studies the composition of matter Ex: blood tests (hematocrit) Composition of drinking water

5 Areas of Study in Chemistry (cont) 5. Physical Chemistry: studies reactions & energy transfers Ex: studying factors that affect breathing rates during exercise

Macroscopic v. Microscopic Macro- can be seen with the naked eye Micro- can’t be seen with the naked eye

Why Study Science? Explains our natural world! Prepares you for a career – Medical – Engineering – Research Be informed how science affects your life

Theory, Hypothesis, Law Scientific Hypothesis- prediction of the relationship between 2 variables…

Theory, Hypothesis, Law, cont. Scientific Theory: Well-tested explanation for a broad set of observations Ex: Theory of Evolution Big Bang Theory

Theory, Hypothesis, Law Scientific Law: Summarizes observations and results of many experiments. Not disputed: Do not change! Ex: Law of Gravity

How Chemistry Is Changing Our World Energy – Insulation– batteries & NASA – biodiesel Medicine & Biotechnology – Aspirin, antibiotics – DNA sequencing, cloning Agriculture – Efficient use of land for growth Environmental protection – Identifying pollutants – Preventing pollution ex: lead poisoning in paint Universe – Probes to other planets
