Southern Sudan has been a war zone since The major fighting is between SPLA and GoS. Since the beginning of 90 th division within the rebel group resulted in the weakening of SPLA as a major force in the South. Militia groups with leaders aliened to the GoS started to become a force by themselves especially in Upper Nile Region. The region was a contested area from 1997 to 2002

CARE /southern Sudan has the following programmes in southern Sudan Education/Sudan Basic Education program Food Security-agriculture, fishery, vet Health and water Sanitation Emergency livelihood security project for Upper Nile

Upper Nile The most insecure region in Southern Sudan due to fighting between different groups High high rate of displacement Highly food insecure either due to culture (agro pasturalists), war or weather No road connection

Emergency livelihood program/ECHO The project targets IDPs, returnees and other vulnerable groups Distribute agricultural inputs and fishing materials Distributes NFI in its area of operation during emergencies
