Emergency Preparedness Effective emergency planning requires that everyone at UMES…  Be informed of what to do in case of an emergency  Be prepared to fulfill roles & responsibilities Today’s session provides you with information about  What to do in an emergency building evacuation  Where you can find more information

Types of Emergencies Your building may be required to evacuate for:  Fire  Hazardous Material Spill or Release  Bomb Threat  Facility or Utility Failure

Evacuation Staff Building Emergency Coordinator  Acts as the liaison with the responding emergency service, EHS, and others, coordinates with building/department administrators responsible for employee, student, and visitor health and safety Evacuation Warden  Walks through assigned areas and assists in evacuation, reports to the evacuation assembly point Classroom Instructors  Responsible for their students and following evacuation procedures

Emergency Evacuation Plan Know the location of your primary and secondary exits Know the location of the nearest fire alarm pull station and fire extinguisher Read and understand the emergency evacuation plan and procedures Know the location of the common meeting area Practice the emergency procedures

Emergency Evacuation Procedures IN THE EVENT OF a Fire, Bomb Threat, Hazardous Material Spill, etc…. ACTIVATE FIRE ALARM SYSTEM LOCATED ALONG EXIT ROUTES IF THE ALARM IS NOT SOUNDING.

Emergency Evacuation Procedures IF THE ALARM IS ACTIVATED EVACUATE THE BUILDING USING THE NEAREST EXIT OR EXIT STAIRWAY. DO NOT USE ELEVATORS. Individuals requiring assistance should proceed to the designated area of rescue and seek assistance from other evacuees to notify emergency personnel of their location. CALL 3300 FROM A SAFE AREA and provide name, location, and nature of emergency. REMAIN AT A SAFE LOCATION AT LEAST 100 FT FROM THE BUILDING until you are told to re-enter. Do not impede access of emergency personnel to the area.

If You Are Trapped By Fire Inside a Building… Stay low if there is smoke in the area. Feel doors before opening - if hot to the touch, find another avenue. Close doors behind you upon leaving. If trapped in an area, close the door, useavailable material to pack under the threshold openings, and call or signal for help.

Emergency Reporting Report all emergencies to the UMES Police Department at EXT 3300 and Notify EHS of a fire or hazardous material spill: Preston Cottman, EHS ManagerEXT 6652 Danna Maloney, ASST. EHS ManagerEXT 3040
