ISIS From paper to pixels Project 1 From Paper to Pixels A Journey to E-Maturity Mick Gilroy: E-Learning Manager

ISIS From paper to pixels Project 2 Why Change? Traditional "paper based“ portfolios, are a stop/start approach to delivery. learners and assessors compile documentation to be retained in ring binders, leading to lots of waste and ineffective evidence. The learner and assessor tend to have short contact meetings, with long periods of inactivity in between. The whole learning process is inefficient, and for many learners and employers, largely inappropriate and antiquated

ISIS From paper to pixels Project 3 Aims of the Project Provide two way remote facilities to access qualifications, assessors and Learners. Replace paper with E-Portfolios. Use a range of technology to carry out assessments electronically. Provide staff with the required training and resources to deliver the project.

ISIS From paper to pixels Project 4 What Else? To cut down travel time for Assessors. To save costs on travel expenses. More time to be spent on learning and assessment. Give learners greater control over their learning. To continue to promote ISIS Training as an ILT centre of Excellence.

ISIS From paper to pixels Project 5 Lincs & Rutland

ISIS From paper to pixels Project 6 Funding Significant investment by ISIS SMT LIG Phase 1(£15,000) and Collaborative LIG phase 3 bid with 5 other providers (£70,0000) BECTA Technology Exemplar status attracts grants for investment into growing E-Maturity

ISIS From paper to pixels Project 7 ISIS ILT Strategy From start of new contract year, 1 st Aug 2007, ISIS began to fully implement the new ILT Strategy as follows: ENVQ became the standard platform for all WBL qualifications. Paper based portfolios are only used when a learner or employer has a specific need and ENVQ is unsuitable.

ISIS From paper to pixels Project 8 Implementing the Strategy E-Learning activities were carefully planned. Staff were trained in the required ICT Skills through a comprehensive CPD programme. Learners are assessed to ensure their individual learning needs are met. E-Learning facilities are appropriately presented and adequately resourced.

ISIS From paper to pixels Project 9 Where we are now 300+ Learners using our ENVQ E- Portfolio. Target of 25% of Employers making regular inputs to learner qualifications has been met. Learning Advisors using a range of technologies to carry out assessment, including regular use of video.

ISIS From paper to pixels Project 10 April 2009 a new E-learning and E- Portfolio system was introduced. specifically for our Hospitality and Catering Learners (3O learners currently using this) City and Guilds Proactive. Fully meets all qualification requirements for Learning, Assessment and Testing.

ISIS From paper to pixels Project 11 How do we operate? All LA’s are encouraged to use technology for assessment as much as possible E.G. Voice Recorders Video and Digital Cameras Multi-media resources On-line learning resources Media suites for processing evidence.

ISIS From paper to pixels Project 13 Learning Advisors Toolkit

ISIS From paper to pixels Project 14 Identified Benefits Lead to greater efficiency and cost savings across the organisation. Increased productivity time for learning and assessment. Increased learner choice and opportunity and improves the quality of the learners experience. Raises standards and increases retention.

ISIS From paper to pixels Project 15 Facts and Figures ISIS Training Currently have our highest ever learner numbers. We hold the largest LSC contracts in our history (Apprenticeships and T2G). Income levels are also at their highest. Average times for completions have been reduced by a third. Retention figures are at their highest level

ISIS From paper to pixels Project 16 Travel expenses and costs reduced by 60%. Time saved is equal to another two full time Learning Advisors (80 hrs per week) Staff can work flexible hours including working from home. Staff satisfaction, working environment and unity is at an all time high!!

ISIS From paper to pixels Project 17 Benefits to Learners Access to learning resources wherever they are. Faster feedback and results. Flexibility. Creates new and interesting learning activities. More control over their own learning.

ISIS From paper to pixels Project 18 Success Stories (1) New Unqualified learning Advisor started in June (Admin, Management, Team Leading) Good general IT skills, no experience of E- learning or Assessment. 4 months intensive support lead to A1 qualification, using ENVQ. Took over full caseload (35 Learners) in Sept 08 now increased to 42.

ISIS From paper to pixels Project 19 To date has achieved 13 Full F/W and 6 NVQ’s. On Target to achieve a total of 23 by end of Contract year (July 09) Consistently uses all of the technology at her disposal to carry out quality assessments.

ISIS From paper to pixels Project 20 Success Story (2) Long serving part-time Learning Advisor, with good general IT skills, who consistently met her targets and delivered excellent results. Well settled into her methods and use of paper based portfolios and resources. Showed some reluctance to change and was not very confident in her ability to adapt to the changes and use technology.

ISIS From paper to pixels Project 21 Participated in CPD with an open mind and realised the benefits using technology could bring. Began to change her working practices of her own free will, until comfortable with the new methods. Fully embraced the resources and drastically reduced her visits to learners.

ISIS From paper to pixels Project 22 Quickly became the role model in how to maximise the benefits of using technology. Has achieved 19 F/W and 11 NVQ’s in the current contract year to date. Is on target to achieve a further 8 F/W and 6 NVQ’s by end of contract year.

ISIS From paper to pixels Project 23 Developing E-Learning Skills Continuous regular staff training on the use of all resources as part of CPD. This include personalised training for individuals to meet specific needs. Managers/Team Leaders attend the E- Learning Guides and “ConnecT” courses as a minimum requirement.

ISIS From paper to pixels Project 24 A planned, organised approach is essential. Have clear aims and objectives and focus on those (Don’t get sidetracked!!). Have confidence in your ability to deliver E-learning and increase your ICT skills. Make use of all the available resources. Continue to work hard to get the right mix of staff skills, learning content and ICT resources!! Lessons Learned!!
