VENTURING LEADERSHIP SKILLS COURSE

Session III: Organization Paper Tower

Venturing Leadership Skills Course3 Organization – Module 1 Learning Objectives At the end of this session each participant should be able to: Understand the critical role of planning in leadership. See the difference between a planned and unplanned activity. Participate in a planning activity in a group.

Venturing Leadership Skills Course4 Organization You mission, Mr. Phelps — whether or not you decide to accept it — is to construct a tower as high as possible using only what has been placed in front of you: One sheet of construction paper Tape Scissors You have 25 minutes

Venturing Leadership Skills Course5 RULES 1.There is a 25 minute time limit. 2.No other materials may be used. 3.The tower must be freestanding and remain freestanding for at least 60 seconds. 4.The tower cannot be taped to the floor or any other support. 5.The team engineering the tallest tower wins a prize.

Venturing Leadership Skills Course6 Planning Reflections Questions What does the skill of planning have to do with this exercise? Was there a time in this project when you wanted to start over? Was it difficult to get the group to agree on what steps to take? Was the final product visualized in advance, or did it just happen?

Venturing Leadership Skills Course7 Seven Steps of Good Planning 1.Set a broad goal or objective 2.Decide what form the project/activity will take. 3.Get everyone affected involved. 4.Consider the resources available. 5.Develop a step-by-step course of action. 6.Consider alternatives. 7.Follow through to completion.

Venturing Leadership Skills Course8 RULES 1.There is a 10 minute time limit. 2.No other materials may be used. 3.The tower must be freestanding and remain freestanding for at least 60 seconds. 4.The tower cannot be taped to the floor or any other support. 5.The team engineering the tallest tower wins a prize.

Venturing Leadership Skills Course9 Planning Reflections Questions What was different this time? Did planning improve the final product? Did planning reduce the time required to complete it?

Venturing Leadership Skills Course10 Plan Crew Activity Spend the next 15 minutes and plan our December 8 th holiday party. Have someone record your plans on the activity planning sheet. Our goal will be to follow your plan when we hold this activity.
