Welcome to Fort Stanwix National Monument Rome, NY Cory Cox-Jon Harrison

Fort Stanwix was built by the British in 1758, ► Built to protect the Oneida Carry, and British trade interests in the western NY frontier ► Connected various waterways with overland trade routes ► Two main rivers:  Wood Creek, Mohawk River ► Built to replace 4 smaller British forts

As you step inside the Fort, you see the “Gun of Last Resort” If an enemy was able to breach the Fort’s defenses, this is fearsome sight that would await them.

The central courtyard and parade grounds of Fort Stanwix ^West Barracks^^East Freestanding^ Barracks Behind the gun is the “Adjutant's Daughter”- Also known as the whipping post. The Central Courtyard and Parade Grounds were used to train troops to march, be disciplined, and have roll call.
