Tariq Aziz, Dammam Community College 3 Changing the Look of Characters The text you type in a document is displayed in a particular font. You can vary a font’s basic design by changing the attributes. Collectively, the font and the attributes used to change its look are called character formatting.

You can enhance the appearance of a paragraph by changing –the way text is aligned, –modifying the spacing between paragraphs, –adding borders and shading around text

Tariq Aziz, Dammam Community College 8 Characters Styles You use character styles to format selected characters. Apply character styles to a single letter, a word, a paragraph, or the entire document.

Tariq Aziz, Dammam Community College 9 Paragraph Styles You use paragraph styles to format entire paragraphs. This type of style consists of: –indents, –alignment, –paragraph and line spacing, –bullets or numbering, and –tabs as well as character attributes to be applied to the entire paragraph.

Tariq Aziz, Dammam Community College 26 Using Automatic Lead-in emphasis Repeats the same formatting to the lead-in text of the next list item when you type a: 1.Bullet followed by (bold, italic, or underlined) text, followed by a (period, colon, hyphen, em dash, question mark, exclamation point) and a (space or tab), and then plain text. For Example Paul: Catch the ball. George: I refuse!

Tariq Aziz, Dammam Community College 27 Border above a paragraph Applies a border above a paragraph as you type three or more of the following characters: –Hyphens or underscores for a single line –Equal signs for a double line –Asterisks for a dotted line –Tildes (~) for a single wavy line –Number signs (#) for a decorative line

Tariq Aziz, Dammam Community College 29 Table Formatting –Inserts a table when you type a plus sign, a series of hyphens, another plus sign, and so on (ending the series with a plus sign), and then press ENTER: will be converted as follow

Tariq Aziz, Dammam Community College 30 Chapter Key Points Change look of characters by changing the font, size, style, and effect. Change look of paragraphs by varying their indentation, spacing, and alignment and by setting tab stops. You can create and modify bulleted and numbered lists by using the buttons on the Formatting toolbar and the Bullets and Numbering dialog box. You can use the AutoFormat feature to automatically format text as you type. You can apply character styles and paragraph styles to selected text to change several formats at once. You can use the Reveal Formatting task pane to display, change, or clear the formatting for the selected text. You can also use this task pane to select text with the same formatting throughout a document.
