CF Constraints to the Strawman BDIR Configuration Tom Markiewicz SLAC 07 January 2005 IR Hall Muon Wall Beam Dump Detector Photon Dump 4m tunnel with “Y”

Tom Markiewicz 2 / 11 Potential Conflicts Up to now: –Work has focused on getting beam in and out of QD0/QF1 doublet Other possible issues: –Longitudinal and transverse offsets of each IP –Lines of sight from each IR to spoilers/absorbers belonging to the other IR Radiation protection issues (Keller) –IR/Beam dump placement –Transverse space for Main Dumps Photon Dumps Crab cavities

Tom Markiewicz 3 / 11 Transverse and Longitudinal IP Separation Need to maintain ~5m concrete shielding between one IR hall and tunnel to other IP

Tom Markiewicz 4 / 11 Double Transverse IP Separation Need to minimize TRANSVERSE separation if desirable to minimize bending angles and tunnel length For given angle every extra m on transverse separation requires 4 x 1/10mrad ~400m extra tunnel

Tom Markiewicz 5 / 11 Longitudinal IP Separation a Free Parameter  z= 300m  z= 0m

Tom Markiewicz 6 / 11 Woodley Decks with COLLIMATION devices shown  x= 21.84m  z= 150m IR1 “sees” IP2 spoilers IR2 better shielded from IP1 devices IR1 IR2

Tom Markiewicz 7 / 11 IR1 Dump Close-up 2.36m 6.63m

Tom Markiewicz 8 / 11 IR2 Dump Close-up 10mrad bend 5m e- dump at z to clear incoming beamline Muon Wall 1m  dump at z to clear incoming beamline

Tom Markiewicz 9 / 11 Transverse Space Conflicts at IR1 Red=1m Dipoles Black = 1m Masks Blue = 50cm Quads, Sext, Oct, Crabs..

Tom Markiewicz 10 / 11 Transverse Space Conflicts at IR1 Mask (1m) Doublet Package drawn as 50cm (BNL QD0 design 14cm) Crab (50cm)

Tom Markiewicz 11 / 11 The Big Dig ~30m deep surface-cut tunnels with ~10m transverse separation implies one big hole with concrete shielding added afterwards
