Week 3: Lesson Health

Bell Ringer  Although soda may taste good i s soda a healthy thing to always be drinking?  What’s your favorite food?  Do you know how good it is for you?

Objectives  Ask the students if they can specify their favorite foods and how good it is for them.  See if they know what is good for them and not.  Then try to teach the different food groups to them and explain to them what a healthy body is expected to receive from those groups  Go to the article, Schools Teach 3 C’s: Candy, Cookies, and Chips by Jane E. Brody of the New York Times for more information.

Good Nutrition Foods that belong to the Dairy, meat, vegetables, fruit, and most of all Bread and Cereal are the most important foods. Foods in the bread, cereal, rice and pasta require 6-11 servings a day. They are your different kinds of bread, any spaghetti and all pasta. Anything made out of milk belongs in the Dairy group and that requires 2-3 servings a day. Meats are self explanatory and they require 2-3 servings a day. They include poultry, dry beans, eggs, and nuts. The confusing ones are the fruit and vegetables as far as what goes where. Vegetables require 3-5 servings a day while fruits are only 2- 4 servings.

Bad Nutrition  Foods that don’t go into the groups that I mentioned before go into the Fats, Oils, and Sweets group. Candy goes into here along with sodas, fudge, cookies, and chips. Most snacks that you would eat that aren’t included in your meal.

Go the the following link to test you skills. 

Closing  What are the 6 main food groups?  What foods go in what group?  How many are of the groups are good for you?  How many servings a day should a person have from the Bread, Cereal, and Pasta group?
