Welcome Investments Keith Vorkink

 What have your heard about Investments (BM 410)?  What do you hope to get out of investments this semester?

Course Objectives Investments & Financial Assets The Investment Process Risk Measurement and Portfolio Theory Information and Market Efficiency (Active vs. Passive Management) clipclip Valuation, Analysis, and Prediction Investment Management

Investments Class Strengths: – Students are generally excited and easily motivated Weaknesses – Students tend to bring ill conceived (popular press induced) notions and biases My hope is that students are ‘Bayesian’ – Being a ‘Bayesian’ means that they are open to updating their beliefs given what is presented in the class

Teaching at BYU Philosophy Uniqueness of BYU education Balance of ‘spiritual’ and ‘secular’ – “Brother Maeser, I want you to remember that you ought not to teach even the alphabet or the multiplication tables without the Spirit of God.” Brigham Young – “Education without values, as useful as it is, seems rather to make man a more clever devil.” C. S. Lewis

My Adaptation Elder Eyring – “You all do it in your own way. Your students will see it in you more than they will hear it from you.” C. S. Lewis – “What we want is not more little books about Christianity, but more little books by Christians on other subjects, with their Christianity latent.”

Classroom Philosophy “Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.” William Butler Yeats Active Learning Articulation Engaging Benefits of being ‘uncomfortable’ Welcome rigor and logical analysis Workload “The expectation for undergraduate courses is three hours of work per week per credit hour for the average student who is appropriately prepared; much more time may be required to achieve excellence.”—BYU Undergraduate Catalog, pg. 46.

My History Alaskan Raised Snow JC after high school Mission in NYC Undergrad at BYU (economics) PhD at University of Rochester (finance and econometrics) One year in Providence, RI and four+ years at BYU Married with four children
