MOM - M.ApollonioAccel. R&D/Physics and IADR - RAL - 19/3/ Summary of MICE operations – 14/15 March 2008 AIMS - establish MICE beamline in ISIS synchrotron vault - establish MICE beamline instrumentation - establish limited operation of MICE target (<5000 actuations) - first measurement of beam loss and particle production in MICE beam - study beam loss and particle production in MICE beam - perform initial radiation survey in MICE Hall with target pulsing OPERATIONS 14/3 6:00  18:00 - verified proper monitoring of MICE magnet PS - a power supply failure due to prior water spill prevented us from using Q1-3 - during D1 testing a major power failure appeared  no beamline available 15/3 8:00  18:00 - focus on target operations (see next page) - installed detectors from ICL and GVA, cabled and running 14/3 15/3

MOM - M.ApollonioAccel. R&D/Physics and IADR - RAL - 19/3/ ACHIEVEMENTS target test report Given permission for a maximum of 5000 actuations. Performed 3679 actuations, 3654 with the gate valve open. Ran target at 0.4 Hz to minimise cooling issues and to maximise time to adjust parameters. Target hold position T = 35 C. Actuate (0.4 Hz) T = 55 C Tested the time delay and depth control mechanisms. Scanned parameter space to find optimum delay time and dip depth. Optimum depth ~45 mm reproducible. Optimum delay 5.9 (ms) from trigger 10 ms before injection Problem with trigger - GMS – from ISIS - solved. Problem with ADC for beam loss signal not solved. Tested target in 128/50 mode and saw that we could extract target in time to miss following ISIS pulse. Happy with performance of target……………

MOM - M.ApollonioAccel. R&D/Physics and IADR - RAL - 19/3/ target depth vs time ISIS filling integrated BLM from ISIS MCR MICE target dipping into ISIS beam

MOM - M.ApollonioAccel. R&D/Physics and IADR - RAL - 19/3/ ACHIEVEMENTS - target successfully run in synchronization with the beam - both depth and delay of the target dip investigated to the limit by any beam loss monitor reading <50 mV - this limit was found to be reasonably stable and not oversensitive to the dip depth - ran target at a good stable setting and a frequency of 50/128Hz (ISIS at 50Hz) - verified target hitting properly end of one ISIS fill without scraping following one - operation mode similar to what we would have running MICE in parasitic mode. - radiation survey conducted soon after shift (3679 target pulses) showed no significant increase of radiation - cabling for Beam Monitors and future detectors done CONCLUSION - the successful operation of the target shows we can operate it for our purposes with no harm for ISIS operation (parasitic mode): fundamental for future operations PLANS - on our way to fix the MICE beamline magnets and test their operations
